It's just semantics really, as far as I'm aware they just used it in the sense that people appearing on the minimap would be spotted in a 2D sense - ie: they're a little blip on the minimap whereas 3D spotting meant they were physically spotted on the HUD and you would see the diamond follow them as they moved. It was probably just to explain the difference easier rather than have an actual meaning behind it - you could supplement both with just spotting and it wouldn't make much difference if you know what it means.
Similarly most people I know mention the red outline people get when spotted via the decoy or periscope as Marked, likely just to differentiate it from the other kinds of spotting.

If you use the periscope or look at the killcam, your opponent has a red edging. Is that 3D for you?
I know that you´re sitting in front of a 2D-screen without 3D glasses like in cinemas, but it is still a first person shooter.
Whether you class the game as 3D/pseudo 3D or not is kind of irrelevant. If the reason for spotting being called 3D was because the game is kind of 3D, then why have the only labelled spotting as 3D. By your logic, it seems like we should be referring to absolutely everything in game as 3D this or 3D that and if that was the case it would then be pointless giving the 3D label to anything at all. Why is spotting so special?

Yeah, I think you're right. Seems to be a jazzy name used to try and specify a slight upgrade to the mechanic rather than it genuinely being anything to do with the 3rd dimension in the technical sense. I just wasn't sure if there was a genuine mechanic to spotting that I was unaware of.
