"You must have a playstation plus subscription to access online features

I just spent days downloading 30-40gb Battlefield 4, only to have the following message when attempting to play online:

"You must have a Playstation Plus subscription to access online features"

Which is funny because it can't be downloaded without a PS+ account.  How do I fix this garbage?

    Please explain why you think you cannot download without a plus account? I could download or purchase anything from the PSN store without a plus account, you just cannot play online. Are you able to play any other games online currently?

    I have a Plus account.  I thought that would've been so mind-bendlingly obvious, apart from others have this problem.

    Solution for this * that I have paid for?  I'll be seeking a refund if someone advises me to re-install and download 40gb, including the use of legal action.
