Constant FPS drops and bad performance!

Hello,

I recently got a new, better computer. My old computer specs were i3-8100, GTX 1050 Ti and 16gb ram and the specs on my new pc are i7-770k, GTX 1080 and 16gb ram.

After I got the new pc I got really excited to play Battlefield 5 on high settings as on my old pc I play everything on low with average fps around 80 and all went smooth. Soon after I downloaded battlefield and enter a new match I got really surprised as I could hardly get steady 60 fps on all low. The game for some odd reason feels choppy and I get these constant fps drops to around 30fps which makes the game almost unplayable.

Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks for sending over those screenshots. Looking at the results from CPUID one thing did jump out at me. It looks like your CPU temperatures got up pretty high at some point. If you look at the max temperature readings for your CPU you can see that they got up to 90-100 degrees C at some point. That's pretty hot. Most CPUs are set up so that if they reach a certain temperature threshold they'll start throttling themselves to prevent hardware damage. That might be what's happening in this case. If your CPU is hitting that threshold and slowing itself down to lower temps that could explain why you're seeing performance drops in-game.

Do you have your CPU overclocked? If so it might be worth setting it back down to the default clock speed to see if that helps the temperatures at all. I'd also recommend making sure you've got good airflow in your PC case as well. Make sure all your case fans are running and that they're bringing cool air in from the front/bottom and pushing hot air out the back/top.

Looking at the CPUID I can see that your CPU fan spun up to over 2k RPM when it was at its highest temperature, but it might also be a good idea to take another look at your CPU fan curve if you have a way to set that. There may be an option for it in your BIOS. You might be able to have your fan speed ramp up sooner to help prevent the CPU from heating up as quickly.

  • Hey @EA_Kent ,

So I tried to format my pc today before I saw your reply to set up a new admin on my pc.

Before I format my friend recommended me to delete all traces of origin and battlefield v on my computer with a program called "geek uninstaller". Basically it removes all the files associated with the game/programm you select. So I used that programm and not format my pc.

After installing both origin and battlefield v, my performance went up. Now, when I set everything on low I get steady fps of around 55-60 but sometimes it drops, not a lot but simetimes. Maybe twice in 45min of multiplayer gameplay of breaktrough. The thing now is that with my specs I should be running this game on high not low.

Just wanted to report this founding of mine, still should I do the new admin user?

I don't think that would really be necessary if you formatted your PC. Have you checked to make sure you've installed all the updated drivers and such since you formatted?

  • @EA_Kent

Yup, all drivers are installed and updated. I even updated my bios just to be sure.

I mean, the game is playable now but only when all settings are set to low. Everything above that I get fps drops which is really weird considering my specs.

  • Hey @EA_Kent ,

In the end you were totally right. After opening my pc case I have determined that my water cooling loop was either broken or not functioning at all. I went out and bought myself a good air cooler and mounted it. After turning on my pc and playing Battlefield I checked my temps and they were under 80 (sometimes a bit over). It was the cooler that war not working after all. Here are my temps now: https://imgur.com/a/WoTRMJC

After tweaking some settings I can play the game around 70-80fps with some settings set to ultra and high.

Also, just to be sure, I have a CPU (i7-7700k) that is overclockable but my motherboard does not support it but I do sometimes see CPU go above its default 4.20GHz, is that normal?

Oh and do you notice my CPU fan or any other fan that went beyond normal RPM?

I would also wish to thank you for troubleshooting my problem Kent, you were really helpful mate.

You're welcome! I'm glad to hear it helped. Those temperatures definitely look a lot better.

Some CPUs have a function that will distribute power to the CPU as needed and lower it when it's under a lighter load. Instead of the CPU sitting constantly at the same clock speed it will fluctuate up and down, and you might see the speed go over the factory default. It's probably normal in this case, but it might be best to reach out to Intel for more details if you're concerned there might be an issue.

Looking at the updated results it looks like your CPU fan hit a slightly higher max RPM than the previous screenshot you sent us. Normal RPM really just depends on how you've got your fan curve set up. For me the main downside to having the RPM set higher is the noise, but if you're worried about the temperatures you can try increasing the max RPM on the CPU fan in your fan curve to see if that lowers them further.

  • @EA_Kent

Oh I did not know that. I will message Intel just to be sure, it's better not to leave every stone untruend if you get me while trying to increase performance.

Can anything bad happend with max RPM? The noise is not a problem because my case has those covers on the side that reduces noise level so I am good as far as noise goes.

Anyway I think by this my problem is fixed in the end. Once again I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to you Kent, you were really helpful.

    @DanijelBlack

    You're welcome!

The max RPM is really just how fast you would want the fan to go. Having a higher max RPM does use up more power and cause more noise, but if that's not an issue for you then you should be OK to increase the fan speeds.

    /Kent

  • @EA_Kent

Oh okay, I will leave it as it is now and if the need arises I will increase the max RPM. Thanks for the tip
