The damage indicators may not be wrong....now hear me out. After playing many rounds in a tank I too noticed the indicators seemed to be off but maybe we're not taking into account the area of effect damage.
I noticed a number of people that were shooting me with RPG's from the front were actually hitting the top of my tank and so the indicator was showing the damage coming from behind me. I think the explosive damage had taken a large hit to my engine and that's why it showed behind as that's where the engine is located.
Considering you now have the ability to damage specific modules of a vehicle it might not be so far-fetched as to say it's these modules that is causing the confusion.
Interesting theory-need to verify. The thing is, even if this is turns out to be true, it would obliviate the whole point of damage indication (being as I understand it) to give the target a chance to face the threat.
@Real_NoobalishusThat was my original theory as well but as @II__SUSHI__II mentions - it completely voids the notion of damage direction indication and makes the system useless. I think that when a soldier gets hit - you have a very small hit box to have your direction detected. I expect they have the same very small hitbox on the tank and it's right on the front of the tank. SO if you get hit anywhere but the very front - it will show side or back as where you're getting hit from.
Definitely needs to be fixed because it's useless as-is.
I also sometimes get this when on foot as well still.

ALSO - I'm noticing that when I see enemy shells coming at me - they pass right over the tank visually but still register as a hit and give me damage.
