Caertain things are timeless and can be carried over with ease, but we need to consider just how old BF1942 is and how the gaming landscape as a whole has shifted.
Hopefully, with new consoles and the power they have, we'll be able to pack more and more content into our maps without the need for massive optimization. Faster load times and stuff should alleviate other problems we've been seeing lately as well.
Battlefield has always been about grand scale warfare but you're right, it could use a fresh coat of paint. They readded thr ability to launch tanks for example so I hope we can continue to see that in BF6
