I think we can overall say it just didn't feel right (feel like a Battlefield) to many Veterans that spent many many hours of playtime in BF3, BF4 or even both.
With the a fact that most players likes the modern setting more, it was already a negative point for BFV being a WW2 setting.
Some veterans already jumped off during BF1 (WW1 setting) even tho i think it was pretty dope. But yeah, that already lowered the player base of OG veterans.
Besides that, some different new ways DICE went with BFV it just didn't match what most expect for Battlefield.
Like the Fortifications, ammo and health supply stations, more limitations for Weapon attachments (cause of game setting and accurate available items) ect.
I wouldn't day it's a bad game, maybe just went into the direction of what most Veterans didn't really feel connected to.

I think it's because there's more 'work' involved in 'playing' BFV than in any of the other BF's .
Feel like having a bit of BFV fun with a session of R-n-G shoot-em-up?
Attrition rules both Soldiers AND their weapons , so resupplying MUST be kept in mind .
Feel like Flying or Tanking with any sort of an enjoyable duration?
Gotta think 'circular orbit' for your constant repairs and rearming .
So . . now you're 'working' a little to 'play' a lot , so , everything should be good now right ?
Nope . There are almost ALWAYS others who will be 'working' it a little harder than you are .
AA Player is dedicated to clearing the skies , so a Flyer has even MORE work cut out for them .
AT Player preys on damaged Tanks , so a Tanker has even MORE work to deal with as well .
So . . stick to I.O. then - there's a lot of fun to be had with a good old Infantry 'zerg' then , right ?
Mmm , Nope again . Even a small amount of 'work' here can 'kill' that fun pretty quickly ; as in :
I saw Solomon's 'A' falling , and so I 'worked out' that I should plop down into bushes at 'B' .
My 'payday' for pitting my 'work' against their 'play' was a 6-Zerg dead and me walking away .
(punny , but . .) Visibility is highlighted in this example , but so too is someone's lack of 'work' .
While fine-tuned for rapid aiming onto movement , R-n-G is highly prone to a Static position .
'Camping' says Hi right about here , so now maybe this "hate" gets closer to the actual Why .
Bottom Line (but not really): Some come to 'Play The Game' , some come to 'Fight The War' .
The difference in between these is what we tend to experience and call 'The Game We 'Play'' .
So , even as bullets and bombs fly wildly so too our emotions get tossed about willy-nilly ?
Nope , or at least not always . At work or In play are distinctly different Battlefield Beasts .
CoolCalmCollected vs TriggerHappyBuckaroo , with NO consistently predictable outcome .
Except Fun (or not)
Yet , there must be both .
And there is .
BFV nailed the 'long periods of boredom interspersed with moments of sheer panic' WW2 .
