Re: Dead space 3 making me nauseous
The problem is the game's field of view (FOV), it's too narrow. EA have done this too give the game a feeling of claustraphobia but it end up giving you motion sickness. I love first person and 3rd person shooters and don't normally have a problem, but occasionally a lazily ported console game to the PC will effect me as developers forget to take into consideration that on PC you are sitting closer to the screen which is taking up a larger field of your vision but not giving you the same FOV on the screen.
After about 40 minutes playing DS3 I was feeling very sick and dizzy. Luckily you can change the FOV like this:
- Navigate your way to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\EA Games\Dead Space 3\
- Open up system.txt in the text editor of your choice
- Find the line “Window.FOVScale = 1.00000000″
- Change the number to whatever you like. By default, 1.0 is an FOV of 75 degrees. For a view similar to Dead Space 1, I’d suggest changing it to 1.2.
- (FOR 16:9 MONITORS) Change “Window.WideScreen” to true.
I found this stopped me feeling sick.
Developers are getting a lot better at giving PC gamers proper graphical options when they port console games over to the platform, but I do wish they'd remember to put in an FOV slider, sadly too many still leave it out and make their customers feel ill as a result (not really a feeling you want to associate with your company I would have thought).
Anyway, hope this helps anyone else who might find this threat having the same problem.
