Tram in dead space 2 wont let me get on

When Isaac is flying across the gap between the two trams when he get's across Isaac gets old of the tram and it has the flashing E light I press the E rapidly but Isaac falls to his death am I doing anything wrong ? I need help with this as well as the first scene with the necromorph in the hospital I keep getting my head sliced off What am I doing wrong?
