Error: Invalid access to memory location when I try and launch the game

Ill give you some information, and things I have already tried to do to rectify this error.

The game is installed on a separate HDD than the main steam account files.

  I believe this to be the source of the error but i am not sure why it should be happening as every other game runs fine

I have tried compatibility for Windows 7 and Vista and XP

I have tried running the game as an Admin

I have tried starting the game directly from the folder rather than through steam

I dont really know what else to try and any help would be much appreciated.

im running windows 8.1

have an r9 280 tri-x gpu

and amd 8350 fx cpu
