Patch 3 Shield Bug
After installing patch 3, all my crafted shields had their armor rating reset to 0 and every time I try to craft a Darkspawn Alpha Shield and equip it on my main character, it's gone after a save/loa...
True, but at most you will have to replace 3 shields (when your own character is sword & shield), 4 if you reskilled Iron Bull. Shields also can't hold masterwork materials and since looted / bought shields are also not affected, the loss in material and money is very low.
At least it's far from being a show-stopper, like #CrincleGate after patch 2. 😕mileyvery-happy:
Oh, and one more thing: Non-crafted shields display their stats correctly, but when equpped, actually SUBTRACT their listed armor rating from Frontal armor, rather than adding to it. I've tried it with my Cassandra and equpping her with the Seeker Shield and a Tevinter tower shield. In both cases, the front armor rating was lower than the overall armor rating.

I had this issue. In fact even with NO shield equipped front armour was lower than overall armour.
I found that if I crafted a new shield and equipped it the armour ratings went back to normal. I could then equip non-crafted shields and have the armour added instead of taken away. I have no idea how this could get so badly broken.

It's almost like Bioware couldn't be bothered to playtest the damn patch.
I have similar problems too.
- Non-crafted shields, acquired before the patch, now subtract frontal armor rating.
- Shields crafted before the patch shows zero armor rating and, if equibed, do not add any frontal armor rating.
- Shields crafted after the patch shows correct armor rating but, if equibed, subtract frontal armor rating.
do not have results in the case for non-crafted shields that are acquired after the patch yet. And I am not sure how these actually affect combats. Maybe it's just tooltip problems. Hopefully the fix comes out soon.
The way I see this.
1) No, shields do not subtract armor rating. I think this is known issue (before patch) with some talents that improve armor rating to only do that to back armor, and not front armor stat, resulting in lower frontal armor for all warriors (not just shield warriors)
2) Crafted shields before patch have armor rating of zero. Removing such shield adds 5 points to frontal armor since default shield has front armor of 5. If you equip two-handler, you'll lose those 5 points.
3) Crafted shields after patch as well as bought shields correcly add to front armor rating. If back armor is shown as higher, this is due to issue 1
This was all tested in exploration area (not Heaven/Skyhold), when specific companion is slected before going to attributes section.
