I never reloaded a save or anything, and when I came back, the cutscene triggered and I finished the mission.
Hope this helps!

i closed that rift too, but it still wouldn't start. however, it did start properly when i examined a corpse not far from the quest. maybe that's important?

Regardless, I closed all the rifts in the area, but it didn't worked. Still cannot interact with pillars.

Same, I cannot get this to work. I did move to other regions already, and I can't just go back to a previous save.

Closing the rift worked for me too.

Nope. Rifts have NO EFFECT on this. It is a bug that needs to be fixed. When I did the mission all rifts had been sealed. I followed what others said was the solution, which was to revert to an earlier save before you took on the mission. I was lucky I had an autosave which was immediately before I set out, probably as a result of kissing Josephine. Redo the mission but do NOT come in through the river. Doing that will make you see the pride demon first which triggers the bug. You have to come in through another route and make sure you see the dead mage with arrows sticking out, and the burnt corpses. Solas will comment on each of them. Then go towards the demon, the cutscene will load and everything will run smoothly. Hope this helps.
