Re: Will the EA app have a Linux version available?

Hi,

I assume there's been an update in the last few days, because last weekend or so I played Jedi Fallen Order on my steam deck with zero issues, and now it won't launch. It starts, gives me the load screen, and then throws me back onto the Steam app. Have tried the game Fe too (the only other game using the EA app that I own) and that one doesn't start either.

No error message or anything, just crashes out immediately.

Is there a fix on the way for this or any workarounds?

    Hi mate,

I've had exactly the same issue. I was playing Titanfall 2 fine for the past few days. Come to today and I can't play. I've tried reinstalling, compatibility modes and even reinstalling steam os incase any proton app or wine I installed in the background was causing issues.

    No luck.

Must have been an update but I am eager to hear if anyone has any support too.

So ... I have Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor, both stopped working at the same time because of the EA app. Same for Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. All of them bought on the Steam store using SteamOS Client.
EA (and Steam) will receive my money, but for EA at least apparently Linux users are not real Customers and do not deserve attention.
So ... I made a dual boot machine with Windows and I played on Windows (which is such a worse experience I was shocked at how bad it is).
Switched to SteamOS and because the NVME drive is shared with both OSs it worked on SteamOS.
To make it work, I deleted everything and rebuilt my machine with dual boot Windows/ SteamOS. I hope I don't have to this every time ... this is at least "bothersome".
I tried every other solution around to try and make it work and this was the only thing that did ... so ... Good Luck!

This topic is 5 years old if I'm not mistaken, so if you run Linux ... just don't buy EA Games that's the lesson here. Every other Game Developer works well, only EA effectively brake their app for the Linux Gaming community.

Let’s clear up some incorrect claims here.

    • Linux / SteamOS is not a supported platform for these games.
Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown all clearly list Windows as the supported PC platform on their Steam store pages. That information is available before purchase. Running these games on SteamOS/Linux relies on Proton, a compatibility layer rather than official support.

    • Nothing was “broken for Linux users.”
The EA app was updated. On an unsupported operating system, compatibility can break. That’s expected behaviour when software is run outside its supported environment, not targeted action against Linux users.

    • “Every other developer works fine on Linux” is factually incorrect.
Games that appear to work reliably on Linux usually do so because they don’t require a secondary launcher or DRM layer. Many titles from multiple publishers fail on Linux for the same reasons when those dependencies are involved. This is not unique to EA.

    • The dual-boot workaround doesn’t prove negligence or that a fix is needed.
Initialising the EA app on Windows and reusing cached data on a shared drive are Proton side effects. It’s incidental and unsupported behaviour, not something that can be relied on or maintained.

    • No promise was made or broken.
EA does not advertise Linux or SteamOS support for these titles, and Steam does not guarantee Proton compatibility. Buying a Windows-only product and running it on Linux is a user choice that comes with known risks.

It’s fair to dislike secondary launchers or want native Linux support. What isn’t accurate is claiming EA is “breaking Linux” or treating Linux users as lesser customers when the supported platforms are clearly stated.

If SteamOS/Linux is your primary platform, the practical reality is that launcher-dependent games on unsupported OSs may stop working after updates -- and that risk is disclosed upfront.

Fine, this is Proton's fault then. Or Steam. Or I'm just a dumb Customer that paid for the game you developed.

My point is and let's correct the statement made,  you are right, it's not all developers.

    From experience:

Epic Games, Ubisoft, Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Nixxes Software, Feral Software, Hello Games, KOJIMA Productions, System Era Softworks, thatgamecompany, 2K, Naughty Dog LLC, Iron Galaxy Studios, and a few more but I think I make my point ...

OK that's not all developers/ publishers, but all of these publishers have some kind of app/ launcher that needs updating and work on SteamOS, and I mean ALL of these, updated their apps/ launchers and all of them don't stop me from playing the games I BOUGHT.

Apparently even smaller studios seem to do some kind of testing on their apps/ launchers on systems like SteamOS, even if not supported to not break them, since IT IS a use case. I don't care for anti-cheat and those who need it have their own opinion and probably (most certainly) won't use Linux (at the moment).

With so many people moving to Linux, it's high time EA did something to support Linux. At least for the last 5 years the feedback has factually been given, and it's been ignored. So ... yes ... Linux users are being treated as lesser Customers, and this response proves that, instead of saying:

    - Yes, support is missing.

    - Yes we should have tested an existing use case (that BTW isn't that niche anymore).

    - We should do better.

    The answer is:

    - It's not supported, and you shouldn't use SteamOS to play the game you bought from us.

Thank you for the answer anyway.
