Re: Slow Download Speeds on EA app

Updates for games are so frequent these days that sometimes it seems every time I go to play a game it needs updating first and it takes so long usually that by the time it's updated I need to be doing something else.

Why are there so many different stages to updating a game and why does each one take so long I wonder. Preparing, downloading, installing, finalizing, etc.

Where I am geographically I'm not really able to have a fast internet connection and make do with a maximum of 50 Mbps download speed, but strangely enough the downloading of an update seems to be the quickest part of updating a game.

For example, as I'm typing this it's been finalizing or "wrapping up" a 5GB update of Battlefield 2042 since way before I started this post and I dare say won't finish until way after I've finished typing it.

Why is Steam so much quicker? It's not as quick as it used to be but is still much quicker in my experience.

In order to play EA games I understand that we're forced to use the EA app, even if they're purchased in a different client like Steam for example. Although this means that Steam deals with the updating of the games, only some are available on Steam I believe. Also, having two clients running for one game means there's more chance running the game isn't going to work for some reason.

I'd like to know how it takes so long to update EA games in the EA app so I have a new found appreciation of all the cpu intensive work that seems to go into it and perhaps I'll put up with waiting better then. 🙂

I have this problem too and it is ridiculous. Jedi Survivor has to go through the entire game files which is ~170GB and then downloads the update and then runs through the entirety of the files all over again.

I don't understand how a 500MB update takes 4 hours to complete? EA needs to get it together, I knew it was a mistake to buy the game directly on their app. Origin was trash and so is this.

@slayeroffaith I couldn't agree more. It's very frustrating. A lot of EA games are really great but the way they're delivered online is nearly always very poor in my opinion. I don't know why they can't improve on it after all this time or maybe they're not as interested in the problem as they should be. 😞
