how can you play "it takes two" with a single controller and PC keyboard?

I have bought a switch controller and hooked it up to my computer via Bluetooth.  So when I start the game and select "play local", I can select the first player via the keyboard, or I can use the controller to select the first player.  But I cannot select the second player via the keyboard or the controller.

What steps do I need to follow to get both players installed?  Or can this not be done, and I need a second controller?

  • @lkmckin If the controller offers a direct input via a USB cable try to connect it that way then launch ITT to see if we can get the controller recognized.

@lkmckin To check are you playing via Origin or Steam? Do you have another controller to test if the PC will recognize it?

@EA_Illium I'm actually playing via Origin. It was installed when I downloaded the game. But I opened up Steam because there seems to be no options to configure or designate a controller in Origin.

I can recognize the controller in Steam, and I can set it up to emulate my keyboard (e.g. Button A = x on keyboard, etc.). But when I've done that and use the controller to choose player 1 in the game, the game shows an icon of keyboard and mouse, and player 2 can't be chosen. So I think I need the controller to be recognized some other way, and not as a keyboard emulation. But I have no idea how to do that.

@lkmckin To confirm Origin does not offer a feature like the Steam controller emulation and setup. Once you launch the game if you plug the controller in and the game can't grab the correct information from the device it may not recognize it as a valid input.

By using the Steam controller feature, it seems we've found a way to use the controller as a keyboard, do you have a Xbox, Playstation or native PC controller to test to see if you can get inputs from while also using the keyboard?

No.  The only controller I have is the one I specifically purchased for the game, which is similar to a Switch controller.  The PC recognizes the controller via Bluetooth.  No problem there.  Also Steam has no problem finding the controller and I can calibrate there, etc.  But there are lots of options for configuration in Steam, and I don't know if some variation of those might work.  I've tried a few.  But I could spend hours randomly trying different combinations, with no guarantee any would eventually work.

I could also connect with a USB port if that might fix the situation.  The controller instructions tell me how to use "D-input Mode" and "X-input Mode", as well as Bluetooth Android Mode.  None of these terms mean anything to me, and there are no instructions on the game which help either.  Neither the game nor Origin itself has a way to search for controlling devices.  The game seems to recognize the keyboard automatically.  But not the controller.
