I'm assuming you are talking about It Takes Two?

You would need to play the PS4 version on PS5 for the PS4 controller to work as they only work with backward compatible games. PS4 controllers don't work on PS5 games due to added features of their new controller.

Also just to note, If you both add friends pass you can try the first chapter together for free, no need to purchase the game until after if you're happy with it. Testing out the game will also allow you to test the PS4 controller.
