Starting to think Nodachi is the buggiest weapon

1. Can't pick up thread on the ground while charging

2. Jumping with celestial thread while charging will pull you towards where the thread is planted, not where you aim to go

3. Biggest one - randomly losing my charge.

4. Sometimes the tripple X normal attack will not charge up special attack faster

The 3rd one is the most egregious. I'll be almost done with my charge, getting ready to hit the monster and then I suddenly realize my charge is gone. I have the stamina, mind you. It's not that.

Then, because I kept holding my charge thinking I can swing, my character will stand in place and a second or 2 later will begin the charging animation again. By that time, the monster will attack again, and I'm stuck in the charge animation and can't dodge. Without exaggerating - this has been a reason I lost 80-85% of my hunts. This very one.

It's absolutely infuriating to lose my charge just when I though I was gonna smack the monster in the face for 900DMG, only to get smacked myself and die.

(It's not the gamepad issue too btw, bought a brand new controller and this is still happening)

I'm not a game dev but - I have stamina skills and eat for stamina too - What if I reach the point when I would run out of stamina and would stop charging, the game thinks I don't have stamina anymore and resets the charge? The falling down animation doesn't play, I still have enough stam to dodge for example. But the game registers that as "no stamina left" and breaks up my charge? Just a random thought

  • Just to add another thing that irritates me about nodachi - You move forward WAY TOO MUCH during standard X combo. It makes it so freaking hard to aim properly at a part. not only that, by the time I charge it up I'm hugging the monster so much It's impossible to aim it where I want and I end up smacking their body for miniscule white damage.

Writing this as I'm hunting lavaback for the 8th time because it's impossible to aim the swing at his head with nodachi and I really need the fangs

  • If it's not the gamepad, sounds like you have some latency issue that's making your game drop inputs. I'm on the PS5, and I've fought Lavaback with the Nodachi and I've not had this issue with my charge not registering.

Also a trick to charge faster, charge the weapon, place a spring board, walk into the spring board and then hit the monster with your double regular attack that will charge your meter 2/3 of the way, hit the monster one more time while still charging to get your meter like 98% charge, just wait a split second for it to fully charge and then let go of the charge to expend your heavy attack. I don't do regular charge attack anymore to build meter, I find it a bit slow so I will always use this spring board method, I find it to be more consistent than the celestial thread.

  • Getting stuck while charging, unable to dodge, due to some kind of bug or animation issue, is the cause of so many failures and hits taken while using nodachi. Especially in Chapter 4, where such things have to be immediate, and precise. It is really frustrating.

  • As a follow-up, I feel nodachi needs a bit of a buff:

Regarding hyper armor for nodachi, there's Steely Iai. I think it is a necessary thing on a nodachi build honestly. I believe I had it once on some lower rank armor piece, and I see in the weapon tree that you can get it as an inherent skill, but not inherited, so you can't build for it. You can only use that armor piece or that one specific nodachi - if memory serves. I do not have a talisman with Steely Iai, but I have been praying to the RNG god to please drop one.

As far as a buff, I think the weapon has a stamina problem. It's a bit too hard to manage in Chapter 4. The game requires that you use fusion katakuri to lock down foes sometimes. Unless you have insane skill, the game literally doubles down on this. That makes the tried and true method of using springs as a key mechanic for nodachi more challenged. You either run out of threads for springs, or you run out of threads for fusion. Both will result in mission failure or at least taking a hit. Celestial Breath helps a little bit, but locks you into one armor set and the Human Path only.

As above with Steely Iai, and then with Celestial Breath, I don't think there should be very narrow locks into very specific setups to try to mitigate overall issues with the weapon. It's not like Celestial Breath frees up threads enough to let you breathe, because to make matters even worse for nodachi, monster aggression is so bad in chapter 4 that sometimes you just have to dodge instead, which of course hurts your stamina use even more.

So, maybe instead of a damage buff, or at least as a starting point, I suggest Steely Iai being a little more available, maybe some hyper armor in specific use cases, and a little more breathing room for stamina usage, which is pretty bad currently. Amaterasu Human Path should also maybe not be the "only" armor set piece you can use to try to help a weapon shortcoming. It sucks when there's limited to no variety in build options due to weapon/mechanic shortcomings, so everyone builds the same, because you are left with little other sensible choices. I think that's a sign that some things need to be buffed or rebalanced.
