I’m not up on the latest topics that people are complaining about deep in the assist discussion threads, but to me it seems obvious that the top 10% (5%? 15%?) of players are going to be faster with no assists. I also don’t really think those are the people complaining about assists though.
I will readily admit I’m not an elite player (I use mid-60s AI with no assists) and that I’m faster with line and ABS. But I enjoy playing the game with no assists because I think it becomes a bit different if a test when you can lock up, spin, miss a braking point, etc. With that being said, it’s disappointing to me that despite being a consistent driver who knows all the tracks pretty well, I go into Ranked and get slapped by drivers who can’t lock up and are given a dynamic braking point at every single corner to help them. Do I think I’m better than those drivers? No, again I admit I’m not that fast. But I do often wish I only got matched with people racing the same way I am (i.e. no assists). As it currently stands, if I want to be competitive in Ranked, I need to turn on Line (and would benefit from turning on ABS). To me, that’s disappointing.
Maybe people will say “well there’s your answer, turn on assists since you’re not good” and maybe that’s fair. I do think there’s a bit more nuance than just “people who don’t use assists are elitist towards people who do” with most people who don’t use assists
