Had the same problem. For me it helped closing the game and restart it. Did not get the error message again. I suppose quick starting the game interferes with the matchmaking

Same problem persisting for weeks now. The only way around is that every time it happens I have to uninstall the game entirely and reinstall.
This buys me a few sessions at best or until I do something else like time trials or career mode. It’s never worked longer than a single session.
I really wish EA would get ahead of this and fix their game!!!!!!! Soooo tired of this

Closing the game and restarting it just worked perfectly for me. Thank you. I had just quick launch the game also though.
I know this is an old thread but I am having this same problem and using external storage
