Re: Strange reflections in VR during night races

@SterbenAU and Devs. it seems like the main issue is that one of the eyes renders volumetric effects (including lights) incorrectly with weird offset. It is quiet horrible to drive like this.

You can easily observe it if you close one of your eyes.

It happens on all quality settings

  • so this issue also happens in non vr and it has to do with fog at night

disabling fog in the xml settings file does not fix it

i spent way too much time troubleshooting my machine only to find out its happening to everyone, heres a timestamp [35:05] of the issue popping up and progressively getting worse as bahrain switches to dusk on jimmy broadbents stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRzgaxUbSmo&t=2105s

i found a fix for it but i wont link as im not sure if im allowed - there is a mod website that has a mod called "No Fog At Nightraces", it turns off fog at dusk/night on the affected tracks and completely solves the issue for me

let me know if this works for you guys too 🙂

Thanks @8ed94b60c80c9cd4 for identifying the cause of the problem. Hopefully this may mean I quicker official fix, but in the meantime the mod you suggested works great!

    Thanks again.

Thank you for the tip!  When I search, the only hit I find is a website that is not nexusmods.  I can't find a download link anywhere -- am I understanding correctly that a paid subscription is required to download from that website?

Side note, I can't believe this isn't an option to toggle in the settings.  Devs, where are you?  Ignoring broken visuals?

  • yeah its on racedepartment, i have an account and im not sure if you can download with a free account or not

there is still a tiny bit of ghosting off the nose but its totally playable, it is frustrating seeing a perfectly clear image through the virtual rear view mirror that i cant get with any mix of graphics settings for the main view

and i also cant believe it hasn't made it to patchnotes, i fully assumed it was only on certain configurations because of how bad it is. might be a mix of very few people playing cockpit view or just not caring. in that jimmy broadbent clip the visual bug gets progressively worse to the point where there is a trail of 10 antennae and it doesnt seem to phase him

Thanks for the info!  I actually got inspired by another post about removing the blurry AA, and I found a fix on my PC!  Would be curious to see if this works for others, and if so, I'll post a new PSA topic.

1: Set all graphics options to what you want depending on performance (including Lighting as high as you want, which is what the fog falls under).

    2: Open hardware_settings_config_vr.xml under Documents/My Games/F1 23/hardwaresettings (Save a backup!)

    3: Find the following line and change volumetricFog to "false". <lighting quality="3" volumetricFog="false" volumetricFogMapWidth="1920" volumetricFogMapHeight="1080" />

    4: (Optional/Recommended if you have headroom for supersampling): Find the following line and change the terrible TAA to "false". <antialiasing taa="false" checkerboard="false" cmaa2="false" dlss="false" cas="0" fsr="0" fsr2="0" xess="false" />

5: Right click on the file and change it to Read-Only under Properties.

-I believe this part is required to keep the Fog setting separate from the Lighting quality.  It did not work on my PC until I did so.

I haven't found any negative side effects so far, and the night lighting actually looks pretty good now!  I do turn vehicle reflections down to medium though since even at ultra, the reflections look bad in VR.

thank you so much @JoeManji08  this fixed it for me in VR you are a life saver I was worried I would not be able to league race at night tracks without getting a massive headache [did a 5 lapper and head felt like it would split in half the rest of the night with the ghosting effects]

I did give the removing TAA a go aswell as I hate TAA being forced on and blurring things and found with short testing even in the G2 at 160% res with a 4090/5900x it had odd jankyness to things in the distance but the image was crisp I will do some tweaking to try get rid of the jagged edges with TAA removed and if I have any luck I will post settings if I remember

@8ed94b60c80c9cd4I did fix it for me, did you make the file read only?

    <lighting quality="3" volumetricFog="false" volumetricFogMapWidth="1920" volumetricFogMapHeight="1080" />
