The assist used is a very important point, and also one I was thinking about in a different context.
The vast majority of people who say they want the car to be realistic would also put a real F1 car in the wall coming out of the garage. They are not as easy to drive as people think. So how real is too real?
I am very open about playing full traction and braking, auto gears, pit limiter and even start assist and use expert mode. I steer for myself, and use ERS and DRS for myself too. I also take the default setup. Based on my settings, if I drive the right line and use my ERS correctly and choose the right tyres I should be as good as Verstappen’s AI i. the same car. So the game should vary for me based on the car, engine wear, and the AI pace range. I am a glorified AI car. So handling is fine.
The crazy variation from track to track I see in qualifying pace astounds me. The average for me is 75 but if I wanted to race at the right setting it swings from 63 to 84 in qualy and the race pace does not always match the qualy AI setting. This in my mind should not happen. I should be able to set one AI for the season because I am not going to improve. The AI also varies wet to dry, or maybe the TC does.
The real point though is the players are all different which is EA’s problem. Who do they cater to?
The eSports crowd? The players who spend hours honing the car set up? The player who wants to jump in a cockpit and just race with minimal effort?
The modes were to help with that, but only expert gives you all the options and lets you set the AI.
AI sliders were to help, but the AI is not consistent track to track, and between wet, transition, and dry.
For some, even full TC is not good enough for rain conditions but other players complain the wet is not realistic enough.
The solution is only in allowing players offline to pick their settings for the features. On line, which I don’t play is a different world which other players can speak to.
If the game becomes un accessible to casual or first time players, it will eventually die. It is the balance that is so hard to achieve, give the biggest fans what they want and you lose a big part of the market. Don’t give them what they want and they walk away bad mouthing the product.
Quick feedback:
- driving is quite ok, still have pleasure to drive the car even though it was bit better in 2023
- AI DRS are clearly an issue and make races not enjoyable. 2023 was much better here
- car performance not correctly updated. That is really annoying to still have Aston Martin way too fast 4 months after the game was released.
- driver ratings : please let us the possibility to change it ourselves at least in Grand Prix mode.
- driver career is good, but will be much better if there can be an option after August/September that car performance development follow real life, like McLaren being faster after Miami.
