Re: F1® 24 [Megathread] Handling Feedback

Some observations (Using a MOZA R9 setup with SRP pedals, No Assists):

- The Maximum Wheel Rotation is set to 400 degrees by default, but the steering animation in the game locks at 360 degrees.  Even increasing the Max Rotation doesn't change the 360 degree lock in the actual car.  After setting the Max Rotation to 360 degrees to match the game's animations, the cars immediately felt better and more responsive.

- There seems to be a considerable throttle deadzone, even when the Throttle Deadzone setting is at 0.  After making sure my pedals were calibrated in MOZA Pit House, I was seeing throttle response immediately in the calibration chart there.  But, when I go into F1 24, the deadzone still exists up to around 20%-30% throttle.  This causes situations where the throttle just doesn't respond coming out of low-speed corners.  Normally you'd want very little throttle as you're exiting the apex to work your way up to full throttle, but the throttle response just isn't there at all until around 30% or so.  So the throttle feels like it's doing nothing until it's suddenly doing too much.  EDIT: This feels more exaggerated in F2 cars and is slightly less noticeable in F1 cars.

- I've had a couple times where, when looking in the mirror, I see the DRS open, then close and open randomly near the end of a straight.  I can't tell if it's just an animation bug, but I notice that time gets lost sometimes when that happens.

- The low-speed grip out of turns feels more exaggerated, to the degree that it feels like there's a TCS assist happening, even with all assists turned off.  But, it's either all or nothing.  High throttle while turning = spin (as you would expect in low gears).  High throttle after getting the car straight = instant grip with no tire spin at all.  So, it's like there's not a gradual drop-off or increase in traction as the car is turning vs when it's straightening out.  The traction is either there, or it's not.  EDIT: I believe this may be getting caused by the default throttle curve in the game (or how it translates to MOZA hardware, wheel/pedal setups in general).

When traction is at 100%, it doesn't appear to be affected by any surfaces, on or off the track.  Below are some videos that show this - cars GAINING time with two or four tires off-track on straights.

- Adjacent to the above regarding it feeling like there's a TCS assist happening when it shouldn't, there are also certain straights (so far only tested on Bahrain and Singapore) where the car just randomly starts slowing down, even at full throttle.  It's always near the end of the straight, which makes it feel like there's also a braking assist kicking in when it shouldn't.  It's not something like bumps messing with the momentum of the cars, it's that the cars literally just start revving down as though I've let off the throttle when I haven't.

- It's almost like there's no linearity or smoothness in throttle increase/decrease, or traction gain/loss, and that's what's making it unpredictable.  Both the throttle and traction just sort of....jump when they jump.

- Spending more time tweaking the setups, the handling itself changes dramatically when messing with ARB and Camber settings.  In general, weight transfer and turning feels a lot more natural with softer setups (low ARB, lower suspension stiffness, lower tire pressures).  But by the time it all starts feeling noticeably better, some settings are at their minimum, or close to it. (ARB, tire pressures, and camber in particular).  The issue here is that by the time you've softened a setup enough to be able to have the right level of turn-in and oversteer, it's not going to be able to be as competitive. It almost feels like everything on the cars are WAY too stiff by default (which also is exacerbating unpredictability), but particularly the ARBs feel more "broken" than anything at default stiffness.

- Braking to throttle transitions really don't feel good with engine braking active.  Part of me wonders how much this may be fighting with the handling model as well.  Turning off engine braking garners much more control when braking and exiting corners.

Overall, the handling doesn't necessarily feel "broken".  Perhaps the best way I've heard it described is that it feels like there's something really good here, but it's maybe not doing what it was meant to do in certain places.

@hassan8486This is kind of what I was referring to with the traction either being completely there or completely not. At Spain, I was full throttle, dipped one rear tire in the grass in T4, and my car immediately spun across the track. That's behavior I'd expect. But with that video, it seems to show that when the car is straight, the traction is locked in at 100% no matter what is going on under the tires.

@homesvslupin I don't think that first link is about handling, that's a track limits issue. The second link shows the game being too forgiving about curbs but calling it FH is silly

@ScarDuck14 as if handing is the only problem in this game.....you know how many things will come out as we play it...

@Nellix82 The biggest worry is they will fix one thing and break 2 others 🙄. As is the way😔

My first impression: I like the handling much better than in the predecessor, even if I still have the impression that something is not quite running smoothly.

I ride on the PC with Fanatec CSL DD 8NM, Formula V2.5 with Podium Paddles and CS Pedals V3 (via Base).

In contrast to F1 23, the steering is very direct, just too snappy. The throttle and brakes are also very different from the predecessor. But that's not a negative. The vehicle can be controlled better and more believably despite more movement. More action. And yes, a little too early and hard on the gas at the exit of a corner, the car breaks away. If you brake too late or turn in too hard, the car pushes almost straight out of the bend. And kerbs are not quite as unproblematic as some people make them out to be. Turn off all the aids.

I don't know what a real F1 car feels like, but this is OK for me.

A new version of Fanalab with a profile for F1 24 is due to be released in the next few days. I'll wait until then and use the settings for the steering wheel from F1 23, which work for now.

As I said, steering wheel on the PC. I'll refrain from making assumptions about everything else 🙂

@ScarDuck14 I am the community that organizes the championship because we have already started everything otherwise we would have moved on to something else already this year.....we are already moving towards the 25th until one day an alternative comes out we will not use the F1s with much bitterness. ...we'll update in the future when I'll make a dedicated post here as I play

@hassan8486 Lol. No but for real. This is the first time the entire system of the handling is made fresh, instead of just tweaking numbers. I'll bet you the grass thing is something simple to fix, some weird stuff like an oversight that led to the reduction of friction on grass also reducing the rolling resistance but in a weird way that causes this result.
We finally have a system in place that actually deals with suspension and tyres properly, and can be iterated upon properly. This is the absolute beginning of that new system. It has a few big issues but none of them scream "this system is fundamentally flawed", like it was with the previous system. I say let them cook.

@c62a35f65d81694f when you do bhrain 25.0 belgium 1.39....etc it means that we are not far from reality but very far away it's a game we are sure that we are faster than reality but not 4/5 seconds...you don't necessarily need to drive a f1 just observe that they either avoid some curbs or when they make a mistake they jump over losing see lecler in imola....
  • @void_snw My question is, why would they serve us with an undercooked handling system?

They should have developed it further for a year or two while keeping a solid, enjoyable handling system, as in F1 23.

@hassan8486As some highly respected sim racers have said. Last years handling they found the sweet spot. Easy to play/drive difficult to master.  Or words to that effect

@ScarDuck14 You can compare 2019 - 2023 and go "yep, I see the similarities". 2024 is completely different. In every way. Suspension movement, camber actually doing what it's supposed to, proper uneven tyre wear because everything else is more correct, the infamous "rear slide-out with no feedback" in medium speed corners isnt with us anymore (though now we have kind of the opposite problem in high speed).
From a purely objective standpoint, this is more realistic. As in, more of the things are done as they should be - geometry and suspension isn't being "faked" anymore, wear, ride height affecting downforce. We have a system now that actually has the things holding values that need to be there, but the values need tweaking.

@hassan8486 Because yearly releases suck but we will still be fed them. Because people keep buying. And this year around I'm guilty of that too. Noped TF outta 21 and 22 though.. almost 23 as well because it was the exact same faulty handling system with tweaked numbers again, but alas, friends want to play.

@Nellix82 I don't know how fast I'll be in Spa or anywhere else. I'm not keen on being on any leaderboards either. Just as little as in WRC or DR. Yes, I "play" too^^

I just enjoy driving, but that doesn't mean that F1 24 is the non plus ultra. I just like it better with my steering wheel than its predecessor. I also liked GP4 and RF much better than the F1 19xx + from EA at the time.

F1 24 is full of bugs, just like WRC. But here it's primarily about the handling. It's not perfect, I don't think, but I personally find the driving experience better than in the predecessor. It's really a matter of personal taste, whether you're more interested in driving or chasing records.

@SomaticCoast375 Theres things in FH that I'd like to see here. 3-point temperature and wear on tyres so we can tune camber and pressure better for example. But overall the physics in FH are pretty muted and stiff. ..reminds me of how the past F1 games were..

LOL what are you smoking bro? Forza Horizon 5 has the absolute worst handling I have ever played in a racing game. The understeer is atrocious! A shame too, because other parts of the game are very good.
