Aggressive AI and their lack of awareness

The AI aggression can really spoil your race and is very frustrating. Perhaps it is more that their awareness of the player car is absent. They force themselves into positions that will often result in the player being hit, often tagging your real wheel and putting you in the barrier - this is very annoying after completing all the practice sessions and qualy session to then have the race ruined in the opening laps.

The most common experience seems to be an AI car tagging your rear wheel which puts your nose into the wall - the AI will then continue to accelerate into the side of you, pushing you along the track.

For context - I have played each F1 game since 2015 on a wheel, in cockpit cam with no assists.

I have found that this issue is present each year when the new game is released.

This year's AI have improved in many ways but the lack of awareness they show is still present.

Yeah this year I am also a bit frustrated about AI behaviour. I thought it will be better when I saw preview Videos. Just yesterday i needed to replay again 3 times turn 1 in USA as the AI just drove into my sidepod in turn 1. My Front wheel passed his Front wheel but they just Stick to the racing line,no room at all. This is really annoying. And then completely unrealistic overtaking tries by them where in RL no one would attack...but yeah, thats this years game. Luckily we have the flashback function 😄

  • @RyKnocks you've summed the AI up perfectly. It's a shame that Codies don't care though and will just make them even worse in the next game.
  • Overall I've been loving the AI and have had some awesome battles that just wouldn't ever happen in previous games. I like the aggressiveness, but I've had issues with them that I wouldn't attribute to aggressiveness, but more to just being broken. Earlier I went for a move up the inside on Vettel at T10 in Spain and he got a better exit and had his front tire next to my wing and I was getting ready to hang it around the outside of him at T12 but he just drifted into me through T11 to get on the normal racing line. I get that drivers make mistakes in real life too, but drifting into a car you literally just saw next to you is pretty egregious. It's not even that it ruins my race or anything, if I think the AI did something implausibly stupid I'll just rewind. But it usually means throwing away what was going to be (or already was) a great battle. Fortunately I feel like I rarely encounter these issues and most of the time when I make contact with the AI it's my fault and I just have to suck it up (by which I mean rewind until I'm not torpedoing them).

Another thing that bugs me is that ironically with the aggression they have, sometimes they just seem to come to a near stop when exiting a corner if I just overtook them which also kills the potential for good battles. It doesn't seem like it has anything to do with a lack of space either because they'll do it closer to the midpoint of the corner before I even have the opportunity to squeeze them outside or anything.

One constant issue i find is when the ai has the inside line into the corner. Every single time they slowly dive through the corner, giving no space and pushing the player outside of track limits.

I learned that ai is tought to match player movement and this explains a lot.

Example in turn 1 at imola: once, while on the outside line, i used my regular braking point, where i would turn for the apex. Ai did the same, as they should as they had the inside line. But as i was on the outside, i accelerated slightly to get around the ai to get to the outside line where i belong. Ai responded by matching my acceleration just as the ai was to turn in. This caused the ai to drive all the way to the outside white line, pushing me completely out of the track. This does not even make any sense, as in addition to braking the rules of leaving space for the car aside, the ai then completely ruined their turn 2.

This was in addition to weaving on the straight, and doing late blocking moves. Even worse and later than Grosjean in Silverstone 2020, when he was penalized.

I do like an aggressive ai, and sometimes the ai can be raced properly, but more often the ai seems as broken as the fighting between Verstappen and Hamilton at the end of last season.

  • It’s kinda wild to see people saying the ai is good this year. They constantly divebomb like theyre trying to take you out. if you see it coming you can avoid them and theyll literally total themselves trying to pass you. Ive also had a few cars get blue flagged and stop on the apex of corners trying to let me pass while im right behind them. Not to mention the fact that you can be ahead of them on the apex of a corner and have them force you off the inside. Its honestly pretty egregious and makes coop online careers nearly impossible to do without being wrecked out each race.
