This is the first time I have played and F1 game and I thought that these kinds of things would have been weeded out over the years of releases- paid a * ton of money for something I can’t even play

If i read it correctly, it looks like David Greco acknowledged the issue with the gearbox and is looking into a fix. Check his tread in general discussions.

  At the very least, it's an acknowledgement of the issue, which otherwise hasn't happened.
