Difference between EA play on EA App and Steam

I purchased EA play on Steam.

MY friends and I are trying to playing F122 together in a league. The problem is that the game requires all players to be in the same platform software (EA or Steam) to play League together.

I have purchased EA play on Steam but my friends have purchased EA play on the EA app.

Would my friends and I still be able to play together in a league or does it require us to all be in the same platform (steam or EA app)

Steam and EA App (Origin) are considered crossplay (yes, really) so enable Crossplay in the lobby or league settings for all of the players.
