Seems like how you ended the previous elimination race determines where you start in the next one. The couple of times I finished 2nd I started there for the next race. All others I was down around 18th after being caught up in the carnage of the previous race.
Elimination is an apt description for it though, as it's not just the clock that can eliminate you. The impending eliminations seems to compel drivers to madness, but perhaps that was the intent. After a couple of races I ended up accidentally tapping the backend of the car in front and spinning them out and then thinking to myself: I guess that's how we play this mode.
As it is it can be fun for a while but I don't see a future in it without some way of discouraging the carnage.
Elimination mode needs a few tweaks such as:
A driver causes an accident should be eliminated
A driver goes off the track or corner cuts more than three times gets eliminated
This whole idea should be eliminated
While we are on the subject
Supercars should be eliminated
