Great observation. The lack of crossplay at launch was reasonably well communicated and I do remember a handful of reviews picking it up. This forest fire still happening just goes to show how detached from the industry this interpretation is – that interoperability between glorified storefronts fits in the "crossplay" definition.
"In video games with online gaming functionality, also called cross-compatible play, cross-platform play, crossplay, or cross-play describes the ability of players using different video game hardware to play with each other simultaneously"

After installing the last patch (1.05) on both Steam and Origin I noticed that the version of the game is the same (1.05.899639), but before the update the versions were different. Any chance of playing together?
An EA employee I had on the phone yesterday told me that the next patch will make crossplay possible. Guessing that's not 1.05 then? Just read the patch notes and there's nothing in there about Steam and Origin. Hope it was not another lie :/
- 4 years ago
Also, I found someone from EA literally saying "It's not cross-play since it's both on PC :-)"
https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/Can-Origin-and-Steam-Crossplay/td-p/9207145#M20242 (comment 3)
So they literally don't even know what cross-play is themselves? Some EA employees say it is, others say it isn't...

"crossplay" between steam and origin is possible via LAN game. tested with hamachi

We read in several news articles, that Origin/Steam won't be able to play together even after crossplay is released.
Can you let us know if that is true? It's hard enough to plan a season without knowing when crossplay will be released, but now we aren't even sure anymore if it will even work across Steam/Origin?
Hope the information in the news articles was wrong, but I'd like to be sure about it.
Here is a german news article about it:
https://www.tz.de/leben/games/playstation-f1-22-ist-crossplay-zwischen-xbox-und-ps-moeglich-zr-91651178.htmlIt basically states that crossplay will only work for PS/Xbox and not for the 2 PC "plattforms".
Hope to get some feedback on this.

Well that would be an absolute shocker if true. Can’t imagine there are many people on origin compared to steam…
but its not an official channel so wouldnt read to much into it for now.
when i race online there is now a steam logo which wasnt there previously, suggesting something might be happening.
- 4 years ago@ajobling1983 I didn't think the first article I saw was true, but now this is the second article stating this (sadly without any source).
I'd love not to guess anything, but sadly we're still lacking any information on what exactly is planned regarding crossplay.
Organizing a league currently really is a pain in the.. butt 🙂 - ajobling19834 years agoRising Ace@MisterJohnny420 I dont play any other EA games, but understand players between origin and steam can play FIFA together. Surely it will be possible here.
- 4 years ago@ajobling1983 Everything else wouldn't make any sense to me, but I also didn't expect the necessity of a crossplay feature for Steam/Origin :b
Just hope I finally get any information here, missing the CM Forum times. - 4 years ago
The problem is, for EA ist playing between steam and Origin not crossplay. Crossplay is only between like xbox-PC or PS and PC but NOT Steam and Origin.
Its very save, that players will never play together at Origin and steam.
That is what you believe, not know. So it is anything but certain.
And just because an employee says EA+Origin isn't crossplay, doesn't mean the developer or publisher sees it that way. Support staff quite often tell nonsense that later turns out to be untrue.
So until an official announcement is made, it's all speculation, and that doesn't help anyone. And assertions of any alleged "certain facts" helps even more nobody. Just wait and see...

I bet 5 Pitcoins that Origin-Steam 'crossplay' will come when proper crossplay comes...
It seems very hard to see how it would work otherwise, in that if PlayStation and XBOX players can have a PC player join them in a lobby what would happen? If a Steam player joins first could only other Steam players join but not Origin? And vice versa? Also, my bet is that a reason possible splitting of the PC league community wasn't seen as a concern during game development was because they expected their crossplay solution to make it a non-issue.
All just my speculation of course.

I've had three EA employees on the phone so far.
Person 1 told me last week that it'd be possible for Steam and Origin to play together within a few days.
Person 2 told me that Steam and Origin can already play together since it's both on the same platform (PC).
Person 3 told me that the next patch will enable cross-play.
Person 1 and person 2 turned out to be liars. So I don't have very high hopes of what person 3 told me...
- mariohomoh4 years agoHero (Retired)@SgtChris_P_Bacon Crossplay has long been incorporated by the jargon of the industry. Media and players alike refer to crossplay as a feature enabling people with different hardware to play together. Hardware here being the other long established concept of platform: every console, PC (as in Windows computer), Mac, Android and iOS.
EA pulled the rug from under the consumers collective feet here. Origin and Steam (and Epic) are glorified storefronts. The platform of their games is only one, PC. It's all the same game, the same code.
No one's denying the need to work on validating software licenses acquired through different vendors, plus the necessary interoperability between the underlying services these store launches run like anti-cheat etc. But they are all on only one platform, PC.
As thus, it is ridiculous to just come out and say "oh you didn't know Steam and Origin would not be able to play together? You silly! Didn't we say that crossplay was delayed?"
EA should be have disclosed this beforehand, way before pre-orders started. They're going against the grain of the whole industry. - Ultrasonic_774 years agoHero

My guess is Person 3 isn't right either but given you have zero confidence either way I'd stop asking if I were you. If there is solid news I bet we'll see it here, or possibly on the official Twitter feed. It would make no sense to just give it to some EA helpdesk staff to tell people if they ask. Also bear in mind that an EA helpdesk will cover all games. It's not like calling the relevant Codemasters team.
- mariohomoh4 years agoHero (Retired)@Jaspervdw95 I get the frustration but I wouldn't call them liars. "Them" here the help desk employees.
They are people from all walks of life and corners of the world sitting in a cubicle or long table with a basic script and a index of questions & answers they get from their manager and that's it. Depending on corporation policy they may be instructed to push for an answer that somehow ties up with the generic "it's an issue and we're on top of that, don't worry" and placates the consumer - hence why "next patch" points may come up.
Person 1 and person 2, same. Type down "origin" and "steam" on their database, get an entry for compatibility, doesn't notice that it's under FIFA or Battlefield category or doesn't know better and there it goes.
Our issue is with EA. - 4 years ago
@mariohomoh I do get your point but I have to disagree with you. Our issue is with EA yes, but basically they "are" EA.
Maybe the term liars is a bit too harsh, I agree with you there, but basically they apparently just make things up.
If they don't know things, they should say so. And not just make up answers to be done with it.
There's no use for a help desk this way, beside giving false hope to people.
In the case of person 3, I asked her two times "is it really confirmed that it's gonna be fixed next patch?" and she said "yes for sure".
The biggest joke of all is that there hasn't been any communication from EA though.

They're employees heeding their boss' orders. They're not your friends.
If policy stipulates that they still need to put out a placating answer when they can't find the proper info on their database, they will do so.
They're not doing that to spite you. They're doing that to earn their paycheck and pay the bills. If they're working to EA or Procter & Gamble or Burger King, makes no difference to them. It's just a paycheck.
You're correct, could very well be that the main reason for such a help desk is to give people "false hope", aka "soothing their dissatisfaction until they either forget the issue or we come up with a fix". And if that's indeed the case, I don't think anyone should expect a low paying employee to go against their orders and "hey mate, this is a bad product and I was told to stall you the best I can".

maybe
person 1 was the house keeper
person 2 was the facility manager
person 3 was the security guy at the entrance - 4 years ago@Jaspervdw95 And unsuprisingly person 3 turned out to be making it up as well. What a joke
