F1 22 - Engine Sound Thread

Hi guys!

As in the last 5-6 years in the Codie forums, I open this thread again, to discuss the new engine sound of the new cars in the game. I hope that the developers of the audio stuff are also here like in the past and maybe get in touch with us here.

Here are some videos based on the early versions of the game. Surely there will be some adjustments in the full game version.

What are your opinions? Which engine sounds realistic? What should be improved until the release?

  • Jarno Opmeer dropped a video around Monaco in the Mercedes today (110% AI Last to First Challenge).

Still not 100% accurate unfortunately, but it improved a lot nonetheless and deserves proper credit for the improvement.

Now we can at least "somewhat" hear the unique Mercedes Turbo Whistle in low revs (around 4k - 8k rpm).

Listen from 10:15 onwards, to get a better experience of it.

Though from a closer analysis, it must be mentioned that in real life official FOM onboard footages, the unique Mercedes Turbo Whistle can already be heard in higher rpms (9k -10k rpm) too, when simply going off throttle and also on each individual downshift. Also the unique Mercedes Turbo Whistle in low revs, medium revs, off throttle sections & downshifts, should actually be a little bit more pronounced and louder as well, to make it much closer to real life onboards.

Here is a lap of Hamilton around Australia and Vettel around Canada, notice how the unique Mercedes Turbo Whistle is audible at around 9k to 10k rpm, and on the off throttle section or each individual downshifts?

If Codemasters, with Mr. Porter @issueskid13 as one of the lead devs on Audio, can also correctly implement this into the Mercedes Engine Sound Bundle, then it will be greatly improved and make it even more close to real life FOM onboard footages!!!

  • Here's a nice comparison video for the Ferrari Engine Sound of the latest Preview Build of F1 22 the game (by "F1Fun4U Gaming"):

In my opinion, the Exhaust Sound is far too loud, the gradual Turbo Whine on throttle when going up the gears is unfortunately not audible in Codemasters version of the Ferrari Engine Sound, and the Turbo Whistle "Bell" Sound Effect (which you perfectly nailed in F1 2018 & F1 2019 the game) on each individual upshift and downshift is pretty much nonexistent in F1 22 the game it seems.

Three changes would be needed to make it better and closer to the real life FOM onboard footages.

    1. Tone down the Exhaust Sound a little bit, to make the standard Engine Sound more pronounced and softer.

    2. The gradual Turbo Whine on throttle when going up the gears, should be audible and much more ponounced & louder.

    3. The Turbo Whistle "Bell" Sound Effect on each individual upshift and downshift needs to be much more pronounced & louder.

  • Here is a ingame onboard of the Alpine around Canada (by SkyZii HD):

And here is the actual real life FOM onboard footage of Alonso in Qualifying around Canada:

The Renault engine is really well made in the game, very accurate!

Thanks for nailing this one as well is it is, @issueskid13 you and your team have done a great job on the Renaul engine indeed!!!

Though if analyzed a bit closer, the 8th gear is a bit too long (but the gearing of the cars is not a issue that the audio team of Codemasters is involved with, it is probably rather something that Mr. Greco @DavidG53 has a say in i guess). And i hear pretty much zero Bottoming Out Underfloor Scraping Sound Effects (i will post a different comment on this particular issue later).
