F1 22 PC VR jittering, freezing screens and crashing
Anyone having issues with VR stuttering inside of the car when looking left and right. Game is looking fine on the monitor but with the headset on it's unplayable. When having to retire the VR scree...
@vapeNgun86okay it's definitely better but still not good. Now I was able to start a race and I have the same problem. If I go into flashback, steamvr crashes. The VR experience MUST be fixed! @EA_Atic
@Pierrerino86I have try some different grafic settings. VR settings on low. FPS are 20-30 FPS and Frametime is 30 - 40 ms. And extreme jitering is too.
@Silvercrow1983 Which supersampling options do you use? I really have no issues with fps. Only with Crashs an jittering.
- I use Oculus (72hz) and Steamvr on default. - ingame on vr High preset with post processing low - steamvr overrite option in the vr ingame Option on 130.
The game looks good and the fps are constantly on 72. Only this damn jittering which makes you sick
got also this issue, but mostly last time i used it. audio jitters also. and sometimes you miss some frames and jump few meters to the dirrection you travel.
have oculus quest 2
amd 5900x
rtx3080
using t500rs (f1 steering wheel) whit t-lcm pedal and shifter th8
to use t-lcm i used rj12 to able to get it to work whit the game.
I have an Oculus Quest 2 with an 3080 and since launch I had 2 main issues with VR, the games was crashing often, like every 10/15 laps and performance wasn't that great.
I tried with USB-C cable and with AirLink and it was the same so I decided to buy Virtual Desktop. I had no crash and performance was great during a 50% race.

Think i'll throw my hat into this ring.
Having a very similar problem to most, the game works perfectly in non-VR mode (4k ultra and 2k ultra both with wheel). When playing in VR i had jittering at first but after playing around with settings and debug tool the jittering is gone, i suspect that was an issue related to trying to push the oculus debug tool settings too hard.
The only issue i have is the crashing, game runs perfectly right up until the crash, perfect FPS, not tearing or jittering (other than the first maybe 10 seconds of loading into the car, but i assume thats texture rendering). The crash always occurs between lap 10-14, usually right after a pitstop but i have tried just not pitting and it still crashed around the same time (occasionally the crash occurs whe doing a flashback but it's similar timeframes). Audio and desktop screen continue playing after a little hiccup but the VR headset freezes and returns to steamVR home area.
As a software engineer, i've tried as much debugging as i can think of, here's the results of some of that (rig details at the v.bottom):
- GPU memory usage is stable, 6.5 -8.5Gb of usage before and after crash. - CPU usage is steady as well depending on settings, no spikes occur. - No erroneous programs are opening during race to interrupt the gameplay. - All drivers updated (nvidia), oculus, USB drivers, game fully updated - Oculus resolution and refresh rate doesnt seem make a difference (though seems to be smoothest on 72hz for some reason, the crash occurs the same on 72hz as it does on 120hz) - F1 2022 Settings don't make a difference, tried everything from low to ultra (non-vr) settings and vr-low to vr-ultra. Interestingly it's buttery smooth on all of them.
- reinstalling origin, steam and oculus completely and on to new hard drives makes no difference - removing overclocks from CPU and GPU makes no difference (didnt expect it to becuase temps and clocks were healthy but hey ho)
- removed all add-ons i had to steamvr such as twitch viewer etc. - confirmed issue persists on online play but i've done all debugging on the same grand prix mode to save my mates from dozens of hours of playing to not finish. - Don't think it's temperature related, the headset gets a little warm, but no more so than with other VR games, and if i immediately hop back in it makes it the same distance before crashing.
- Oculus air-link and cable link have the same issues. - The last major bug check i attempted was buying a new headset, initially saw the issue on my oculus rift CV1, but i was that psyched to play the game in vr i bought a oculus quest 2, problem is identical on both, just looks a whole lot nicer on the quest 2.
Cant find logs for the actual game, probably because i'm playing it through origin, but steamVR and Oculus logs are available if it would help you debug, ive combed through them and it just looks like a "lost connection to vr server" error for the most part, but i get the feeling thats what it should do after whatever bug occurs.
Oculus debug console (i think this helped most with the jittering, either that or the 3rd july update helped):
- 32Gb 3200hz Ram Corsair Vengeance pro (CMW32GX4M2C3200C16) - windows 10
Using Logitech G29 wheel.
Playing through Origin. So load, oculus (connect via air-link or cable link), load steam VR, launch f1 through origin selecting VR game mode.
As a side note, thanks for putting VR in, i know it's crashing 10 laps in to every race for me, but it's a beautiful thing up until that point, incredible effort boys. Slipping between hamilton and verstappen on 100 difficulty to take the lead after they had a little bump on the last corner of barcelona was a major gaming highlight of my 31 years.
If theres any more debug i can help with drop me a message / reply / DM, however it works on here.
As a side side note, it would be dope if we could have HUD in VR as well, asking Geoff's replacement how far ahead the driver is 3 times a lap is immersive, but it would be cool the have the timings. It does show the driver names and proximity arrows (which are sometimes flipped) but no laptimes map etc.

What worries me about the VR issues is that EA/CM have said that if the adoption rate isn't high enough, they won't implement it in next years game. For me it's an essential feature, having VR in F1 has brought me into the series - I won't play racing games that don't support VR as I love the immersion and I'm not a natural racing game fan.
The issue is that because the VR implementation is so rough, a lot of people won't play in VR and go back to monitors, so the adoption numbers won't reflect peoples true feelings about if they want to use VR or not.
For it to be accurate, the VR implementation has to be spot on, and at the moment it isn't. If it isn't fixed and we roll into next years game and it's removed, that will be it for me with the F1 games for the reasons above. I really hope it doesn't happen as I LOVE this game in VR.
The Oculus SDK needs to be an option as it is in Dirt Rally 2.0 - it works fab there.
@Worthy82 If they said that, they are not commited nor interested in VR. They brought it to this year's game to see if it can bring new players to the franchise, which is my case.
If they are not interested in VR players, it's fine. Seeing how many bugs and inconsistencies this franchise have, I don't think I will buy next year's game even if it continues supporting VR anyway.
@Worthy82 same here, i was brought to this game because of VR support. After driving in VR, i can't drive pancake anymore. If they remove support I won't buy the next games and compete in other sims. If they don't fix VR I will also not buy the next game. Currently VR is really an unpleasant experience.
You should already accept that there will be no fixes for VR. Money making is for EA more important. They don't give a damn f u c k i n g 5hit about happy players.
