I'm terrible with a wheel

How do you guys do it. I have a G27 my partner bought for me like 5 years ago that I never used (it was awkward to put on my desk, so I put it in a closet and forgot about it). Ended up buying a wheel stand to try it out again because I hear all the time how wheel is quicker.

For me that's not true. Put in lots of practice, I'm much more twitchy, I can't brake properly, not smooth at all. I'm honestly way better with a controller.

Am I missing something here? Why am I so bad lol

@Albert_Park_ a polo shirt tucked in shorts always mean business. I'm not surprised he is the one holding up the trophy.

@Nylink you've got a handful of good answers here already and they all converge on this: it is a slow process, but we always get there. I think you just need to find joy in it.
Consider swapping another simracing title in the mix as I suggested before. Gotta have fun while adapting to the wheel to keep the frustration in check.

  • @NylinkIMO you are caring too much about lap times at this point. You will never have fun if you compare your previous times with a pad (with years of experience behind) with those you are doing with a wheel (with which you are just at the beginning).

You should instead strive to become immersed in the driving itself, something that a pad could never give you but a wheel surely can. You will soon see that the more you get immersed in the experience and the faster you will learn. As I said in the previous post for experienced drivers the faster way to learn sim racing is to try to replicate the experience of driving a car in the sim as much as you can.

Instead of focusing on lap timing focus on consistency and immersion. Lap timing will come with practice and the most important part will be that you will have fun while doing so instead of treating what you are doing like a job.

As for your problem with braking: if you use a Logitech wheel then, yes, the brakes can be too stiff in the beginning if you don't have a fixed cockpit. Brakes are one of the primary components for lap time in a wheel setup, so it is extremely important that you configure them to suit your driving style and preference. There are many mods available for the Logitech and/or videos with DIY solutions on Youtube to alter the brakes and make them less stiff. If then in the future you enjoy driving with a wheel I suggest you to look for a set of load cell pedals that make a lot of difference, since they measure pressure instead of pedal travel (that's much more similar to how braking in a real car is done).

Dropped the AI to 25 (from 90) and I'm in last place. This is terrible and unfun for me.

Maybe focus on time-trial for a bit? Resetting any previous times so you can focus on improving from where you are.

Ok just a suggestion.. Don’t be hating cause it’s definitely not a sim.  But having recently been playing grid legends and I’ll admit I’m having a blast.  And having a nice little break away from this game.  Handling physics in grid have been  simplified (Arcade):  But at the same time great fun.  It would make for a much easier and fun  way in understanding  your wheel. Esp when it comes to holding a power slide or doing drifting. If not on sale digital.  Buying a physical copy should be as cheap as chips

I know some might think I’m wrong cause you’ll learn bad habits..   As grid is arcade. The sense off speed and handling is exaggerated  very much like real  Go-karts. Where   All f1 drivers began and acknowledge that’s where they developed their skills

Yeah I'm going to time trial more with the wheel on tracks I love in hopes to improve the timing.

I'm also buying a small mod kit for the brakes to make them a little less stiff

Going all in with the wheel. I want the immersion. I'll mark my progress each month and hopefully see some improvement.

  • @Nylink Try mixing up the games you're playing as well if you're getting frustrated. It can remove some of the annoyance if you're learning the wheel at the same time as a different game.

You will definitely see improvement, just changing the stiffness of the brakes will increase your enjoyment.  Hopefully you'll end up loving the wheel. My times and lines are now better with the wheel and I only get an 1hr or so everyday.

And then you try a real sim like Assetto Corsa Competizione...

@Nylink If 22 is the only racing game you have ya can try changing the brake with the clutch in the game menu.
Gives you a softer brake then and there and can always be changed back if you dont like it with the added benefit of not taking your pedals apart.
For testing purposes if nothing else.
