As above, I don't think it has been taken away. However I don't buy your realism argument. Drivers have deltas on their steering wheels so when a cockpit view isn't being used it makes sense for this to be on the HUD. Unless you're arguing that the game should only have cockpit view I suppose, which obviously won't happen.
