I’ve had crossplay enabled since it came out though, and there’s never ever been an issue with this. However, it’s just begun happening every single time now.
Let’s wait and see if anyone has any other explanations.

There is a bug in the game. You get stuck in loading screen and the game nevers starts. It happened to you.
Lately implemeted solution is, that the players who get stuck also get kicked. Thanks to this solution the other 19 players doesn´t have to wait for you to turn off the game so they can play the race.
Also this happened to me today. I turned off the game after this and then started the game again and I was able to join back in the race and takover my car.
