What make / model is the controller? (A thought occurs that it is mapping to the keyboard in hardware....but I digress)
I would delete the controller profile from the game (unless it is a/the unmodified preset).
Update the controller (if it has a driver or firmware).
Unplug it. Verify Steam files and delete the 'hardware_settings_config.xml' (Documents\My Games\F1 22)
Launch the game. Verify the keyboard works correctly. Plug the controller.

But, I'm guessing that disabling the controller has allowed you to enter your name and then it's fine. What happens if you use the keyboard in the in game navigation when the controller is connected? (Hint: when using the controller the shortcuts should all map ro keyboard, e.g. F keys and Enter, cursor etc.)
You should then have a custom control scheme of keyboard and controller or a scheme where Keyboard and "Controller" are both enabled.
- @SteveJackson Its a wireless Xbox controller, uses BT, only really need to use Keyboard for typing in name for driver creation and Team creation so once I had done that I reactivated the controller.

I advise you read and refer to this document now and in the future. Glad you have it working.

- @SteveJackson I have no issue whatsoever with connecting a wireless Xbox controller to my PC that isn't the issue here, it looks as though the actual issue lies with this particular game as I have never experienced the issue with any other game I play.
- ScarDuck143 years agoLegend@davejc64 Point is. Even if it was a game issue it won’t be fixed. But if it was a game issue why are you the only person that is having the issue? If it was the game there would be multiple bug reports n the subject. I asked Steve for his help because he is your best hope off finding out what is causing the issue. So please be humble.
- @ScarDuck14 ok fine, as I found a workaround myself, no further input on the subject is required maybe the thread could be closed or deleted.

@davejc64It’s all good. Just because you’re the only person that had this problem doesn’t mean there won’t be anyone else in the future. Your own workaround and Steve’s suggestions will help if/when someone posts with the same or similar problem. But will move this over to technical issues board.

Exactly. The reason I posted that link is because Microsoft have put that updating the controller is important. And just because you can connect an XBox controller to a PC doesn’t necessarily mean you should without first considering there could be issues.
Something specific may be wrong in your instance or it would be a known issue or solution.
But also as @ScarDuck14 points out it could help someone else reading / searching similar threads to their own issue.
It is rather tiresome to hear the “it’s only this game” line, I don’t have many of the issues posted here, in this instance I only can’t disprove the game at fault because I don’t have the hardware.
