Re: VR Support for F1 2022

@EA_Leeuw   This is a copy and paste from a post I made over on the Codemasters forums when the game was annouced. I am hoping you can help to clarify these things for the VR users, as there is a lot of confusion currently about just what is and isnt supported.

----------------------------------------

I am seeing a lot of people wonder just what VR headsets will actually work with the game. Especially on the Steam Forums. As HTC Vive is clearly stated, that is SteamVR as a platform yes?
HTCVive was created to fuction directly through SteamVR natively. Would you be able to look into having these things clarified, as the confusion isnt good.

Things that need clarifying.

Is the Oculus API included in the EA Origin version of the game and the Steam version of the game

Is the SteamVR API included in the EA Origin version of the game

If SteamVR is supported, will any headset that works through SteamVR work with the game (which is usually the case for titles that offer VR intergration via SteamVR)

The VR landscape is vastly bigger than just 2 headsets, and Oculus and HTC havnt been the only 2 players on the hardware scene for a very long time now.

You have Valve Index (native SteamVR HDM by steam), Samsung Odyssey, HP Reverb/G2, Pimax (and more). All of which can be used via SteamVR. So this issue really needs some public clarification.

The way things usually work is that anything that can run through SteamVR, either natively or via platform linking. Will work with any steamVR title. This includes Windows Mixed Reality headsets such as the HP ReverbG2 and Samsung odyssey headsets.

Its actually very important to know what VR functionality is like on each PC store, this also includes "EPIC"; which I only just noticed is selling F1 22 this year. It is super important to know what platforms offer which VR API's. I can not stress enough how important it is that both OculusAPI and SteamVR are supported. Just like in Dirt Rally 2.0. Preferably with a start up option to run the game on a montior, Oculus, or SteamVR. Again, just like Dirt Rally 2.0. This is regardless of which PC store the game is purchased through.

Oculus Headsets do not always work well when running on a VR platform outside of their own API, so you will push out a large portion of the VR playerbase instantly if the Oculus API is not supported independantly.

And if SteamVR isnt directly supported also, you will push out the rest of the VR playerbase on SteamVR and WMR.

    Hey @Ialyrn,

Unfortunately, there is no more information available than the info that has been posted on our website. But I appreciate the feedback and I'll make sure to pass it on to the teams.

    Thanks.
  • This is vital information for me if I'm gonna purchase the game or not. I've moved over to racing in VR only so if my HP Reverb G2 doesn't work in F1 2022 I will not get it. Hence I want to be sure that it does before I purchase. I can stick to iRacing and AC(C) but I really love F1 more than any other racing so I do hope it will work.

I've said this a couple of times already, and I don't work for CM/EA, but it will 100% work with Reverb and all WMR headsets.  Anything that works with SteamVR does, and Vive is SteamVR.

What if you buy the game on Origin?

Can anyone please clarify, where exactly has it been stated which headsets will be supported?

On Steam, so far it only says 'VR — Get the ultimate immersive F1® experience with virtual reality compatibility on PC that lets you feel the drama of the race from right inside the cockpit.'

I've seen Rift and Vive mentioned here, but not actually read it officially. Where exactly have CM/EA given more detail on this?

    Thanks

See here for what we've had so far in terms of official info. (paragraph 7).

Thank you for that, so it does actually say:

'F1® 22 also includes VR compatibility on PC via Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to give you the ultimate immersive F1® experience'.

In which case, I ask Codemasters/EA, to please be sure to officially support WMR / Reverb G2, as it is a current and popular headset. (Rift is not even a current headset anymore - ok a Quest will presumably work but still, they seem to be behind the times quoting the Rift; and expecting us to assume our G2 is ok just because it works on Vive, is NOT customer oriented).

I know others here state it is 'bound to work as it is steamvr', but I for one have several games that are 'Vive compatible' but the WMR/G2 controllers simply do not work correctly. OK, the controllers are probably less of a problem in a race game that should be controllable via steering wheel buttons, but nevertheless, CM/EA should surely be recognising and stating official support for the G2.

I will wait with interest, and hope to read that F1 '22 works well with the G2 before I buy it.

@EA_LeeuwIs there any update on the points I rasied?

I am waiting to be able to preorder the game to show support for VR being added this year, but until I know if Steam or Origin version support the OculusAPI directly; I cant. As I dont know which digital store to by the game on.

This SERIOUSLY needs expanding on more so people can make informed purchasing decisions.

I would too like to know which headsets are compatible - I would like to buy the Oculus Quest 2 if it works with F122.

Thanks for sharing that. Now we finally know which VR headsets are supported. Thinking of going with the Valve Index so I can get Half Life Alex for free. Any disadvantages with this headset vs. the others?

thank you for linking that video!!

finally an official statement about PS VR, its at 10:43

Alex: As you mentioned before VR is pc only at the moment, are you able to talk anymore about the possibility of VR on console?

Answer: well I think the main reason we did it on pc first was this is our first experiment with vr. So we just wanted to do it on one thing at time, get it right, get it feeling right, and you know get that done and dusted. There's no plan as yet to do anything else but that's not to say that's it's not gonna happen

So.. its not planned but we can hope on it.. surely we will NOT get it at the game launch

@HansenhausThe Index is a 3 year old headset with a very low resolution compared to what you'd find on newer/other headsets such as the Quest 2, Reverb G1, Reverb G2, Vive Pro 2, various Pimax models, and really high end headsets like the Varjo Aero. I wouldn't recommend it for F1 2022 or sim racing, unless you are CPU or GPU limited.

EDIT:  Worth mentioning that what's even more important than resolution for visual clarity is pixels per inch or pixels per degree.  Because the Index has a slightly wider FOV than some other headsets I mentioned (sans maybe Pimax), it's already low pixel count is spread over a larger area, making it's visual clarity even worse.  It's lenses also have issues such as glare and god rays.

@moogleslamThank you for this valuable info. I'm a total newb when it comes to VR. Never had a desire to look into until F1-22 and just started researching a few days ago. My hardware is on the higher end: 5950X and 3080ti so higher end VR headsets could be considered.

Does the Varjo require Steam VR 2.0 base stations for head tracking?

    Thanks again!

Unless I'm missing something the list of devices is vague.

I've watched the video (closed captions) and the only real meat on the bones is that Steam VR is required for it to work either on Steam, Origin or Epic.

However, the store page says Valve Index, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive but SteamVR supports any OpenVR or Oculus SDK compatible headset but there is no system requirement for VR other than that of the poorly specified headsets. I don't have time to look at all that, I don't mind research but at the moment I feel I might as well have a blindfold on.

    Hey @Ialyrn

At this time there is unfortunately no additional information available.

If there is additional info available, it will be posted on our socials and the (previously posted) help article(s) will be updated.

    Thanks.

Any difference in VR on Steam and Orgin? or its gonna be all the same? I'm gonna buy Meta Quest 2 so want to be sure.

  • @Dominix1910Quest2 does not require either software to run (outside of they are running in the background).. it comes with its own PC software that can launch steam (and assume origin) titles. Running Quest2 through SteamVR actually causes fights between oculus pc software and steamvr over resources and which software controls resolution/pixel density etc etc.

I am looking to get a Varjo Aero (which I believe works with SteamVR), but it will be a bit of a let down if it doesn't work with F1 22. This gives me hope. But how do you know, if you don't mind me asking?

This is where I am at.
i use steam vr and virtual desktop with my quest 1 to play Acc and ac. This works fine via steam.

if I buy this on origin am I going to be able to use virtual desktop and / or steam vr to play in vr.

worried about buying outside steam, but is cheaper on origin at the moment.

This. It works okay in SteamVR but it's got some jitteryness. Oculus VR would help this immensely as it tends to for most VR titles I play.

Still happy that it's in and expect updates in the future to further optimize the experience
