Ok so far it is the Function Lock on the keyboard that is the problem.
What you can do is:
Disable hot keys on the keyboard in BIOS, or if you are able to use
the F-Lock on your keyboard use that, or you can press the fn key + the f keys
like fn + F1 or fn + F2 etc.
This game is a lot to handle so far.
Really need mouse support.
You've probably got past this but I recall that one 'trick' to making a keyboard work on F1 games is to first mouse click anywhere on the screen once the game has been started. Your odd experience may have related to the keyboard's 'focus' being on whatever was going on in the background rather than the game itself.
