Why League Racing is in a critical state - What EA is doing horribly wrong

I am making this post to try and understand the current situation that we can find in the league racing community.

Not too long ago, probably around F1 2020 and when F1 2021 came out -  League Racing was as popular as never before. Yes, there were many issues that tried to combat the popularity, such as the massive De Sync after an early patch in F1 2021 that caused league racing to fully stop for three weeks, or poor driving standards and behavior by drivers that notably got a lot worse in the last couple years.

Still, League Racing was on a high with a huge momentum. That momentum seemed to have stopped entirely with the latest F1 22 Game. I am aware we are still in the summer so many people are on holidays, nevertheless its a visible phenomenom across platforms and many leagues -  small or big -  that attendance is at an all time low. Generally its no secret many people do not like the physics and the handling of the cars, which is fine in a way.

Nowadays a division or tier gets about 30 drivers (not all being full time of course) and you get around 12-15 people attending. The reasons are varying all around but the common denominator is clear: lack of motivation.

But why is that?

Following below I am going to try and give as many reasons as I can to highlight the main issues, why league racing is at a very critical state and potentially about to die soon.

1. Handling and Physics

As if mentioned above, the handling and phsyics of this years game are not really enjoyable. We all know the cars of this generation are very stiff, heavy, and front limited. As a result it is no suprise that things such as understeer, bottoming or reactiveness are pretty poor. Still tho, it really feels like you are driving a massive tractor and throwing car around isnt possible anymore. (i recommend trying out F1 2013 - the cars are so alive its just so much more fun driving around)

I dont want to criticise this too much, since basically this has a realism aspect, nevertheless imo and asking many other league racers, the developers have gone a little bit too far.

2. Audio Issues

This is probably the biggest issue for a huge chunk of league racers. Not all are experiencing the audio stuttering, mainly old gen consoles. Now, many people would say: "get a new console", but that is an irrelevant argument, since the game was released for those consoles, therefore it should be playable as well.

I know from some new gen guys, that even they are sometimes experiencing stuttering, but then it seems to be the entire lobby. Drivers on PS4/XOne are experiencing the stuttering every single race. Sometimes just a little bit, often so horrible that the game is not playable and a restart is necessary (which does not help every time). Specifially occuring 100% of the time on tracks like Abu Dhabi, Miami, Jeddah etc.

This issue is so bad, that it caused thousands of racers to not start league racing season, which is totally understandable. The game is not playable like this. The question all affected players ask of course is: "How is it possible to not detect this while development?" - and I think thats a good question. Its massive f-up by Codemasters to release the game like this and then not having a fix ready immediately after launch. over 2 months in and nothing is coming. I dont want to insult too much but this Codemasters - is a disgrace!

3. General support for Multiplayer

We know, the game is far from finished when it was released. Not just multiplayer, but all game modes were and still are flooded with bugs and glitches. Multiplayer being the one - as always - that has the most issues but gets the least amount of support. I dont want to go into the arguments of "Multiplayer is the least played game mode", i know that.
The fact, that the delta is still broken and you cannot see your intermediate time relative to your PB after crossing sector lines is outrageous. It cannot be too hard to show how many tenths you are up/down on your PB when crossing thru sectors. Other issues that make the multiplayer horrible are:

a. Sound issues all around (no stuttering, but weird sounds when spectating)

b. No 2nd medium. (an issue that is so bad and dumb, i cannot even put it into words)

c. Connectivity issues (Yes, de sync is still around and often causing incidents, were nobody is at fault. connectitivy gets much worse when CP is enabled, if it works tho. Many people get a PlayFab error when trying to enable it and nobody knows what that even is)
d. Track limits (Track limits are horrible in this game. everywhere you can get 2 warnings for one journey off track. its really annoying, since 5 people need to get warnings removed every single race)

e. Ongoing Formation Lap glitch (How this even happens is mindblowing: The host gets warm tires, everybody else cant get them over 83° once the FL is done.

f. FPS has an effect on physics (one, if not the worst issue. higher FPS cause you to bottom out over curbs that you can slam over if you put the fps to 60 or lower. Something that causes every league that does have CP to come to a sudden stop. (notably even WOR and PSGL on only PC stopped their running)

There are many more issues of course that occur in multiplayer, the ones I highlighted are just the issues I think have the biggest factor in the downfall of league racing on the F1 games.

(I am pleased to edit this post, everytime somebody adds a new issue in the comments.)

In summary I must say  I am deeply frustrated and angry with the developers of this game and the lack of support for the most important and loyal base on their game. I know that EA does not like league racing, since it is organised outside of their world, so they do not get any influence and money out of it, but Its unfair from EA and Codemasters to treat the community like this and not even note or aknowledge that they are doing something horribly wrong.

I hope this Post gets the attention it needs, so devs can see and understand what they are causing to a huge community!

  • Your missing a factor. Not sure how big that factor is.  But in every genre from what I can gather online play is in decline.  Gamers are going back to single player.  I image pay to win, micro transactions and live service games plus continued copy and past of multiplayer games and not to mention games launched riddled with bugs are resulting in gamers  fatigue.

I really wish multiplayer and by extension league racing were seen as a much higher priority than it apparently is. Posts of people unable to get into ranked lobbies with other players is a real concern, as are the de-sync issues that have plagued league racing in both this year's game and last. If the last gen audio stuttering issues are when racing (rather than just spectating) then that's obviously a big deal too.

It is great that cross-play functionality has been added and this shouldn't be ignored but stable performance is obviously key.

And the highest user scores on meta critic are primarily single player games.   I also don’t mean that no one wants multiplayer.  I’m pretty sure all gamers would prefer multiplayer if it worked as advertised.   Things like  Reasonable grind  lengths.  Reasonable in game purchases.

When it comes to fifa  it’s by far the most played game and FUT is a good multiplayer mode well used to be.   But even popular Fifa you tube gurus are unhappy.  Be it pros unhappy that they all play the same formations and tactics.  Especially on next gen.   Or being beaten after completing dominating a game.

The day you realise they dont care is the day you can live better. It is there for years. Only thing they care for is esports. Thats it. nothing more, they hate league racing.

Fortunately none of this particularly applies to F1 multiplayer, and long may it continue. It just needs to work better.
