Let me preface my remarks by saying I don't play online, and I'm an older person (played Madden 95) so I am not what you would call a fanboy, as I find extreme attitudes rather immature, but in reference to every aspect of the game besides online play, the latest edition of Madden is better than the online reviews, whether they be individual people or gaming websites.
I'd say it's mostly just disappointment from the community. The game plays very well and earnest effort has been made especially in this last entry to improve things for the better, but it's clearly not as polished or well-developed as it probably should be given its the sole NFL simulation game. Missing features like create-a-team or create-a-play, lots of bugs, and generally just not as much depth as many would like to see from a game of it's price. I do think people get a bit too worked up over some of it, but at the same time the old joke about each game just being a roster update certainly isn't far from the truth in most years.
I am in the 30 club of being a Madden NFL fan. It started with Madden 93. I'm liking the game play more this year. My on loss is the packers rating in the game.
