Check and release should be assigned to "gaps" not specific men.
We've all seen it.
- RB or TE on a check and release assignment let's a free rusher come through untouched cause his "guy" drops in zone coverage.
- Or, on the edge check and release guys block for a quarter of a second then let their guy come through. Giving the QB barely any time to hit the check down, let along look down field. Almost feeling like a naked bootleg. Never good.
It's time we made these assignments smarter. Just like we did for zone coverage. Just cause your "man" goes drops, you should still look for work before going out into your route. And on the edge, the blocks HAVE to be held a tick longer and be more effective.
Also, get rid of the stupid cut blocks on play action. Makes no sense.
