Gameplay is Broken
Long-time Madden fan here. I spend money in MUT specifically to build a competitive team and compete in Madden Championship Series tournaments.
Seriously… this is one of the WORST Maddens in years.
I really hope EA actually takes feedback like this seriously, because from a business standpoint, I think the franchise is going to continue seeing a decline in fans, competitive players, and ultimately money if the gameplay keeps going in this direction.
BY THE NUMBERS
The most recent Championship Series Pro Qualifier had only 2,974 players enter.
Considering the overall Madden player base across PS5, Xbox, and PC, that should tell the EA team something.
Why aren’t more people competing?
I think a huge reason is simple:
The gameplay can’t be trusted.
OFFENSIVE LINE / PASS RUSH
The offensive line is horrendous right now. Seriously, it’s almost a joke.
It takes very little skill to generate pressure. Players can rush three or four, put edge rushers in contain, and watch offensive tackles allow almost immediate pressure.
And it doesn’t even seem to matter whether the edge rusher is actually good.
I’ve watched slow DTs with low acceleration get moved outside and fly around offensive tackles without even needing a legitimate finesse or power-rush win.
Players are exploiting this in multiple defensive schemes.
For example, out of formations like 3-3-5 Penny and 3-3 Cub/6-1 looks, players can move edge rushers several yards outside the LOS and somehow get almost instant pressure around the tackle.
There is nothing realistic about that.
If anything, the run game should punish someone for manipulating their defensive front that way. An edge defender lined up extremely wide should create a weakness somewhere else.
Instead, players can manipulate the alignment, get ridiculous pass rush angles AND still defend the run.
Where is the tradeoff?
Offensive tackles should also recognize these repeated rush angles better. If somebody runs the exact same pressure over and over again, I shouldn’t have to make multiple protection adjustments every single snap just to get my tackle to acknowledge a defender he has already seen 10 times.
OL awareness needs to matter.
PLAY ACTION IS EVEN WORSE
I thought the entire purpose of play action was to make defenders respect the run and potentially create additional time or openings in the passing game.
In Madden, sometimes it feels like the opposite.
I can run play action with seven or eight players involved in protection and STILL get sacked almost immediately because of missed blocking assignments.
How does adding blockers result in LESS protection?
That completely defeats the purpose of using play action.
THE CATCH METER
I understand the idea behind adding the catch meter. It creates another user-skill mechanic.
But right now there is too much power attached to it.
Just because somebody can consistently hit green on the meter does NOT mean that player should catch practically every football.
At some point, ratings have to matter.
Catching, spectacular catch, catch in traffic, jumping, awareness, coverage ratings, height, positioning, and the defender involved should all factor into the result.
Otherwise, what’s the point of ratings?
Players who don’t use the meter also shouldn’t automatically be at a disadvantage when they correctly time a user catch, interception, or swat.
Right now, it feels like whoever is better at activating the meter has dominance over the ball in the air — offense OR defense.
I can correctly position my defender, time the jump, attempt the swat and still watch the receiver come down with the football because the offensive player hit the meter.
User skill should matter. The meter should matter. But RATINGS and POSITIONING should matter too.
The meter should enhance the probability of making the play. It shouldn’t override everything else happening on the field.
EVERYONE IS RUNNING THE SAME THING
This might be my biggest issue with competitive Madden right now.
EA has created these massive playbooks with hundreds of plays, but online it feels like everybody runs the same handful of formations.
I can play 15 games and see almost the EXACT same offense and defense 15 times.
Bunch.
Trips.
Double Stack/Clamp-type formations.
The same 3-3/6-1 defensive looks.
Over and over and over again.
At that point, you’re basically playing the same opponent repeatedly with a different username.
That’s a major problem.
There are hundreds of plays available, yet competitive players gravitate toward seven or eight because certain formations or mechanics can be exploited far more effectively than everything else.
There needs to be more identity between playbooks and more legitimate counters built into the game.
Give teams unique formations. Give different schemes actual strengths and weaknesses. Make personnel matter. Make football concepts matter.
If somebody wants to live in one formation the entire game, there should be a football-based counter that forces them out of it.
THE BIGGER ISSUE
Madden should reward football knowledge + stick skill + strategy.
Right now, too much of the competitive game rewards finding whatever mechanic, alignment, formation, protection issue, or meter interaction can be exploited most consistently.
That’s not the same thing.
I’m saying this as somebody who LOVES Madden. I’ve played this franchise for years. I spend money in MUT. I compete. I WANT Madden Championship Series to grow.
But when thousands of players are competing while the overall player base is dramatically larger, EA should be asking why more players don’t want to participate.
I believe gameplay is a major part of the answer.
Fix offensive-line logic.
Fix unrealistic wide-edge pressure.
Make OL awareness matter.
Fix play-action protection.
Balance the catch meter so ratings still matter.
And most importantly, create enough legitimate counters and scheme diversity that playing 15 games doesn’t feel like playing the same person 15 times.
Competitive Madden should be about who understands football and executes better — not who found the best exploit first.
