Visit Play Now/Exhibition and you'll be able to play couch co-op there. You can also play Online H2H with a friend if you're both on different consoles.
In Connected Franchise mode you can play against each other if you are matched up. For an offline franchise with the same console you'll have to both be controlling different teams and be matched up against each other as well.
Your best option to quickly jump into a game with a friend at home is to do Exhibition/Play Now.

So to be direct, my brother and I cannot each pick a team and play through a season together?
I'm trying to figure this out as well. I can't play on the same team as my son in franchise mode? If that's not possible this needs to be fixed!
