Kickoffs are live balls if they go at least ten yards and touch the ground inbounds, without ever going out of bounds or into the end zone.
Think of a kickoff to the 5 yard line that the receiving team never touches as a really long onside kick. The opposing team's only restriction is that they cannot advance a recovered onside kick.
