The official statement and reason why online services are taken down can be found here. 

Having games in a library does come with a cost of maintaining it. The Madden community tends to jump to the latest title each year. Madden 22 and 21 are currently in the EA Play List where most of the community is, therefore it's best to own this title outright to continue playing it going forward.
