Madden not recognizing that I am signed in to Xbox Live

"YOU MUST BE SIGNED IN TO XBOX LIVE AND THE EA SERVERS IN ORDER TO ACCESS THE ONLINE FEATURES OF THIS TITLE" keeps showing up when I try to access the ea servers. I am already signed in to xbox live but madden is not recognizing this. I can log onto the ea servers on other games (like NHL 16). Also, my friend can access the ea servers while playing Madden on the xbox I am using when he logs into his account, so it is not a problem with my xbox or my internet. How do I fix this?
