I am having the same problem. The only way I can get past it is to simply any kickoff plays. But that only works for cpu games. My games look like the Michigan and Minnesota game. Other team wins by a land slide because I can't kick it more than 20 yards. I'm almost to the point where I'm done playing madden games. They get worse and worse every year and instead of fixing the problem as they come they wait to fix it with the next game.
Same issue here. This is ridiculous.

Just a heads up I'm going to close down this post in the Madden 21 forums since it's from 2020 to prevent further necroposting.
The kicking meter not accurately registering the button taps could be due to two reasons:- Poor connectivity to the servers which lag will result in miscalculated timed kicks
- A kicker is not actually in your kicker position on the depth chart and you have a punter in your kicker position
