Make Our Careers Matter: Improving Long-Term Superstar Mode Immersion

Hello EA Sports Development Team,

I’m a longtime EA Sports player who has invested countless hours into Madden NFL and College Football over the years. I’ve played through numerous careers spanning many seasons, including individual careers lasting 15 or more seasons.

As someone who genuinely enjoys the long-term single-player experience, I wanted to share an area where I believe EA Sports has an opportunity to make significant improvements.

My biggest criticism of career modes is that the game doesn’t seem to recognize the history you’re creating.

For example, in one Madden career, I played approximately 15 seasons as a quarterback, breaking numerous NFL records, winning championships, collecting individual accolades, and eventually earning a place in the Hall of Fame.

Despite those accomplishments, the in-game commentary rarely reflected my player’s career. Even after establishing myself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, the broadcast experience felt nearly identical to my rookie season.

When I finally retired and entered the Hall of Fame, I was disappointed to receive little more than a congratulatory message before being prompted to create another career.

After investing that much time into building a player’s legacy, I expected something more meaningful.

I believe career modes should become more immersive the longer you play them.

Some improvements I’d love to see include:

  • Dynamic career commentary: Announcers referencing previous championships, MVP awards, broken records, memorable games, and historical performances.
  • Career recognition: Broadcasters discussing a player’s legacy, comparing them to NFL legends, and acknowledging the significance of major milestones.
  • Meaningful rivalries and storylines: Commentary recognizing previous playoff matchups, former teams, and long-standing rivalries developed throughout a career.
  • Hall of Fame presentations: Retirement ceremonies, career highlight reels, statistical summaries, and personalized Hall of Fame inductions.
  • College Football integration: College accomplishments influencing NFL draft position, rookie expectations, and commentary after exporting a Road to Glory player into Madden.

I also believe advancements in artificial intelligence could create exciting opportunities for this type of immersion.

Imagine commentators naturally referencing a game-winning touchdown from eight seasons earlier, discussing a quarterback’s seventh Super Bowl championship, or debating whether a veteran player is the greatest to ever play the position.

These moments wouldn’t necessarily need elaborate scripted storylines. They could be generated from the statistics, achievements, and events the game already tracks.

I understand that EA Sports serves many different types of players, including those who primarily enjoy online competition and Ultimate Team. However, there are also dedicated players like myself who genuinely enjoy building careers over hundreds of games and many seasons.

For us, the experience is about more than simply winning the next game. It’s about building a legacy and watching that legacy become part of the game’s world.

I don’t just want to control a great football player. I want the game to recognize that I’m controlling a great football player.

I believe improvements in this area could dramatically increase immersion, replayability, and long-term engagement for single-player career modes.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my feedback. I hope this is an area the development team will explore in future releases.

Sincerely,

A longtime EA Sports player
