There are a few ways to counter the pause glitch. The only sure fire ways to beat it are to hit "resume" immediately after a user you are playing pauses it, or to simply out wait the other guy if you are caught in it. Setting your status to "away" makes the other guy think that he's gotten you to stand up and walk away, then he'll try to resume it and catch you while you're away from the controller. If you use either method I told you, you will beat him at his game, but the second way involves being more stubborn than he is. Odds are he's just looking for an easy win so you may be able to get him to quit if you show that you can wait it out too.
