Roster / Inactive Players

Can anybody help with my query below?

In connected franchise off-line for a coach, during the off-season where you have to cut down your roster to 53 players before the regular season starts, I had more than 53 players but the only option I have is to “release” the players and incur a salary cap penalty. Why are there no options to make players in-active or on the practice squads? So I can cut down my roster accordingly without losing players and losing salary cap. I am missing something or are my settings incorrect?

Because each year I will have the same problem when I have my 7 draft picks, I will lose either players already signed on contracts or lose the rookie picks even though I may want all 7 of them in the future.

Obviously in my first year I had over 70 players, and had to release 17 of these, and it resulted in a salary cap penalty of $3.7m!

If I want to keep the rookie picks, I have to either trade away my current players or release them; surely I am doing something wrong?

Also where is the option to select a player for the “franchise tag”?
