Why can't I play madden online games even with xbox live?

I got xbox live so I could play online games but it says " this membership does not allow you to access this game mode " or something like that. Does that mean I need a gold madden membership or a xbox live gold membership? Is there a way to play without paying for a membership or something? Someone please help.
