They need to find a solution to make it work. Pressing refresh take up too much time - all the more so if you are monitoring several bids at the same time.
Maybe only allowing people with the bid screen open to keep bidding would be a good compromis. It wouldn't help with multiple auctions but it would make individual auction work properly.
