so i was replaying arrival dlc for me 2 and according to the quest npc destroying a mass relay will wipe out everyone in the system it's located ... wait what every mass relay was destroyed at the end of me 3 no matter the ending did bioware forget their own lore :D i suppose you could explain it away with the mass relay using the energy to convert to whatever ending you choose but it still seems like really poor writing
No, it doesn't.
What she describes is the consequence of a brute outside force attack that eventually detonates the mass effect core, while the catastrophic events in ME:3 let the Mass Relays 'overload' from within which simply damages renders them inoperative them.
100s of civilisations over the millions of years designing the Crucible might have considered the potential destructive power ...
Exept from what she's saying what destroyed the solar system was the stored energy in a mass relay not the brute attack thus by logic any destruction of a relay would result in the same shockwave destroying every single major race homeworld including earth only colonies located away from the mass relays would survive

You're complaining about someone writing something in a game previous, in the forums for the current iteration...to draw some negative hate.
ME:A is supposed to be a "spin off" which means any and all lore.. in the previous iterations can be ignored. It really isn't important, to me at least.
Ryder is loosely related to Shepherd.. came from same galaxy.. now elsewhere. Saves the day. That's all that matters. Mass Relays do or don't wipe entire civilisations out on exploding... not important.
The story writing in ME:A is excellent. The banter between characters in scenarios and in the nomad, plus all the backstory for each character is all good stuff. There's spelling mistakes and literal mistakes but the people writing this are only human.

The 'stored energy' in a mass relay was used up to destroy Reapers, Geth, EDI and every other Synthetic AI thread (or for merging all organic life with synthetic life). I understand the overload of the relays as a more controlled process than a crude detonation. No problem here for me.
The real writing trickery is that no-one in 500 million years or so should have come up with a similiar idea to accelerate an asteroid ...
There is some poor writing in other parts that bother me more which is less about space physics, whatever mechanics etc.
The Arrival relay was destroyed - and it's energy forcibly released.
The relays in 3 were connected, and in unison dispersed their energy naturally.
It's about as cut and dry as that.
Shooting a gas tank vs opening the valve on the tank will have wildly different outcomes. The Crucible opened the valve to the relays, so to speak.
And to answer the other guy above me - you can't say that never happened. For all we know it's happened several times before. We have no way of being sure that the relay network is complete - there could be 100s of them that were destroyed that we don't know about, lost to time. Or alternatively the Reapers repaired them - it is within their power... I wouldn't say that's a writing hole.
Even if in 500 million years, nobody came up with that idea - it's still not a writing flaw imo. I mean we are playing Andromeda right - are you telling me that in some 500 million years, no other species or group of species every considered the journey? Especially knowing the ones who came before us like the Protheans, probably could have done it at their leisure? Now THAT is a real timeline based hole. (unless we want to get tinfoil hat about it - and assume it is possible a species in the past has done it, and we just don't know yet 😉 )

This was argued and talked about extensively to the Nth degree on the old Bioware boards. Like someone said, it is told as the difference between a controlled release and a catastrophic release. But hey, you want to talk about bad writing......I can go there......
1) Destroy ending(high readiness)....everyone doesn't die in space ships and planets as their tech implodes, BUT somehow all Reapers and advanced AI do......so somehow an energy wave can distinguish between the 0101 of a Ship reactor core control center and the 0101 of say the Geth....I could see Edi dying, because she was part Reaper tech, but how does an energy wave tell the difference between software programs?? Remember the Geth die....which are SOFTWARE, as repeatedly told to us.....Geth in one ending were actually helping the Quarians with their immune system by inhabiting their bio-suits and simulating sicknesses to stimulate the immune system of the Quarians, so Geth can survive in Quarian Bio-suites which says to me, they don't require that much processing power to run a Geth.....yet they die???? How energy wave know the difference between a Geth in a Bio-Suit and a program to regulate oxygen for the Quarian??
2) Why didn't Harby just shoot the Normandy down???
3) Synthesis ending......how does an energy wave use Human DNA to decide how to mate tech and organic on a planet across the Galaxy that probably doesn't even have anything close to Human DNA.....examples closer....Turian, Quarian(dextro based).......what about Prothean(4 strand dna)??? Where does the tech or organic matter come from?? How does it tell the difference between a toaster and a Geth??....Heck, Geth are SOFTWARE...the machines running around are simply platforms they can move into(think mobile homes for programs)....so how does a hardware platform having organic parts really solve anything.....ok, your nice travel trailer now has living tissue.....does it change you at all when you use it to go camping....or just gross you out??? Remember Geth are SOFTWARE by lore, as repeatedly told to us..... How does mother in Synthesis give her child electronic components in the womb??? Are animals now part of the collective mind?? How does that effect natural selection, wildlife.... What maintains the tech part of people's bodies??Can it break?? Who designed it??
4) Why didn't StarChild just open the Citadel relay for Harbinger??
5) How did people who didn't even know Starchild and the parts of the Citadel he inhabits existed, manage to create a machine to use it.....aka Crucible??
You see, they hand waved most of these points and said just because we said so...so why would a little hiccup about relay explosions ever register as an issue...???
We went from a SciFi space opera to a "Godmode" we say so in about 15 minutes at the end of the game.....so just wave your hand and poof it is all better now...
Yup, pretty much summarizes the giant plot hole the entire ME3 ending is...
One really shouldn't compare one relay imploding vs ME3 as the ending is so very very poorly written and detail cross-checked...
