gun won't work. please help!

In Mass Effect 3 there's that mission in a geth base where you must shoot a reaper for the first time. You get this prototype laser aim gun, but it wouldn't work with me. The mission says: Aim the reaper and lock the target. But i can't lock the target. I get the 'no ammo' sound when i press the fire button. I don't have time to try out some keys that might help, because the reaper fires and i die instantly. Is it a glitch for the gun to not work or have i forgotten something? I hope i must not jump back a level, because i really had a hard time for getting to this point in this mission.
vahlirian is correct (although I thought it was the RIGHT mouse button...)
When you hold the mouse button, two bright lines appear on either side of the Reaper as if they were coming down from the ships in orbit.
As you continue to hold the mouse button the lines converge on the target point.
When they join, the fleet (and the Normandy) fire!
Result = Profit!
[EDIT] So you have to dodge the Reaper's fire until you are in a position to stand still and hold the targeting designator (it's not really a "gun") on the weak point long enough. Oh, and you'll have to do it multiple times to finally defeat this one.
SpoilerI could give you hints on how that that's done, but you might want to try to work it out for yourself first.
